I clicked the video and the very first thing he said was me (apart from his name), a windows user and a noted Mac OS hater. I used to take the mick out people at work for using Macs and used to laugh at anything Apple. I was dragged up on command lines then started using the very first iteration of Windows.

Then I actually used OSX and it all just made sense. The rest, as they say, is history. Now I'll go back and watch the rest of that video

Some of the points he makes are definitely legitimate, and it's surprising that Apple doesn't fix some of these things since they seem so obvious.

I've ordered a base 14" MBP to test out again.

Honestly, if using single screen, make sure you're using touchpad and fullscreen apps - three finger swipe left and right between apps or up the way to see everything that's open and choose between them

Some of the points he makes are definitely legitimate, and it's surprising that Apple doesn't fix some of these things since they seem so obvious.

They are pretty decent videos and for sure, it does make you wonder why Apple haven't implemented the simpler features like displaying transfer speeds whilst moving/copying - would really save the hassle having to load Activity Monitor or using a third-party tool. Although arguably MacOS isn't alone in it's quirks or oddities, most OS's have them unfortunately.

The only thing that really resonated with me in his videos was how the Apple community (now) typically responds to an issue or problem you might have with it usually being "why do you want to do that?" or the absolute infuriating almost Falling Down inducing, "well it works on mine " type responses. It's the one thing you don't really see, by and large, in the *nix/Windows communities. Although i suspect it's mostly down to Apple devices now being squarely consumer focused whereas back in the day, if you had an issue with your SCSI or ZIP drive on OS9 (getting old ), there would be plenty of users on message boards/IRC chipping in with fixes/solutions.

Agreed entirely but some of the things he mentions are just handled differently in macOS to Windows and it seems like he wants them to work like Windows.

For example, rather than work with the Dock in macOS, he installs a third party tool that makes it look and behave like the Windows taskbar and then complains when that third party app hangs or freezes.

A nice surprise today, work are shipping me out a brand new 14" MacBook Pro which I wasn't expecting. Currently running on a 2017 MacBook Pro with 8GB RAM and struggling hard. Be nice to test these in person, and I can have more than one monitor again!

Nice. I'm really looking forward to the end of August when my 2018 i7 Pro gets upgraded. It's just seems so slow/hot/noisy compared to my personal M1 Air.

It's been in use all week, we probably have very similar workflows both being VMware centric, and it handles everything amazingly, my last MacBook was majorly under specced but they were planning a massive device refresh so just had to wait a bit longer. I've gone from having Teams and at most 4-5 tabs and 2-3 terminals open to being able to pretty much whatever I want, I no longer lock up when sharing via Teams, which isn't necessarily the old Macs fault, as it's garbage software. Postman actually works without beachball as does Royal TSX.

The Apple Silicon macs just blow the old intel ones out of the water for 95% of people. I have the 14" and its just an amazing device. I haven't been persuaded to upgrade my iPhone since the X. I have a 2018 iPad pro that works perfectly but dear god I hated my old intel mac. I just didn't realise how much until I got my first M1.

Will this suffice:

This is my 16” (soon to be replaced by an M1 Pro 16” as soon as I can get my hands on one).
Logitech MX Keys keyboard, MX Master 3 mouse and Dell Alienware 34 inch monitor.

This has been my main workstation since I purchased it 2 years ago. It wipes the floor with my desktop PC that has been relegated to gaming machine only now.

Just reading through this thread again trying to convince myself I don't need one of these Just in case I change my mind what is the stand that is holding your MacBook in place?

Sorry, I've had a look and can't be of any help. I was sure I bought it from Amazon but I can't find a record of it and I can't find anything similar either. It's just a generic metal stand with rubber insert, no special brand or anything.

Cool thank you, I think I have found something very similar on Amazon.

Also Mx gear is it connected via Bluetooth or dongle? Any issues with them on the M1 ?

All Bluetooth for me and haven’t had any issues at all. Not sure if there’s a difference between the OG M1 and the M1 Pro in that regard?

Logitech Options doesn't have an ARM version and the Intel one through Rosetta has major compatibility issues with M1 macs, something to bear in mind.

Did a search again and there's Logi Options+ (which is in beta) and has a native ARM version:
https://www.logitech.com/en-gb/software/logi-options-plus.html

It doesn't support all devices, but it does support MX Master 3. And apparently it just works fine.

There's also SteerMouse, which is a paid software ($20 purchase) but it integrates into MacOS settings and allows you to do everything you do with Logi Options, and a lot more.

Feel an idiot even asking this but setting have changed since I last had a Mac. How do you set it so when you connect a monitor and close the Mac lid the monitor stays on. Google is inclusive seems like it has changed in Monterey release.

Also frequently visited pages in safari seems to have stopped working as well

Any help would be great

Just close the lid (with everything attached) and continue using. No need to set anything up.

Thanks for the quick reply, tried that via HDMI and screen turns off. Does it have to connected to power? I didn't do that as I was too excited and setting things up.

That could be the reason, my screen is USB-C and powers the laptop so the two always go together. In the power settings (Settings -> Battery) you have some options about what happens when the lid closes when connected to battery, I think default might be putting it to sleep.

There's also a free app called Amphetamine which gives you a lot more control over these settings.
