Ukraine Invasion - Please do not post videos showing attacks/similar

I think this whole endeavour to seige Ukraine has become a complete embarrassment for Russia. I used to think they were a fairly formidable military force, judging by the war game exercises they used to band about.

But all this conflict has shown is their ineptness, lack of tactics, shabby equipment, and a complete lack of regard for innocent civilians. They've literally become a cesspit of a country overnight.

A lot of Russia's military scope has been total war and delaying action in the vast lands on the periphery of Russia hence their S-400 system which is capable at indiscriminately knocking targets out of the sky is crippled by the potential issues of taking out civilian air traffic in this war, etc. and their tanks are poorly suited to the job at hand and so on.

When you remove the microscope from this Ukraine war, China is a big threat to world peace. They basically gave Russia approval to invade Ukraine and any public statements they make now come across as lip service. They know that in a similar situation they can ride out sanctions, have infinitely superior logistics to Russia, and an institutionalized political system that will garner home support.

It is amazing that the West allowed China to grow so much. I remember back in the 00s them saying something along the lines of "we'll be a friendly superpower". They know how to sandbag and do things under the radar. Trump (for all his faults) was able to expose some of their ugly side during the trade war. But there is this undercurrent of hostility brewing with them developing their military especially since Xi Jinping came along.

When Poland, Bulgaria and Romania joined the EU it was the perfect chance to transition away from Asian manufacturing and for Europe to be self sufficient. Likewise US and the many Latin American countries they could depend on. It's a missed opportunity and one that will be rued for generations to come.

We seem very slow in the West to waking up to threats where the hostile (overtly or covertly) actor isn't playing by our rules.

Definitely, China are there just lying in wait biding their time. If NATO has to act against Russia, China would ally up with Russia straight away. Then the stage for WW3 would be set.

Why do you hate your own country?

Are you Roar in disguise? That is one of his favourite accusations when anyone criticises this government or the establishment. I don't hate my country, far from it. What I hate is our government and the establishment that protects them. We've known for years that politicians have been taking Russian oligarchs money/favours and we've just allowed it to get brushed under the carpet. It doesn't bother you that our PM went above and beyond to get the son of a Russian oligarch and ex KGB officer a peerage when our own security services warned him off? I'd question how much someone loves this country if that didn't bother them. Just because they are elected doesn't put them above criticism and if anything should make them more accountable, not less.

I think the thing the west don't really grasp about China is they really plan for the long term - they want Taiwan, and the to be the dominant global power - but they don't care if it takes 50 years and not 5.

Thank you 0007, beats the crap most people post on here.
100% this. I find your posts, 0007 to be very helpful in gathering information together that saves me a lot of time that I don't necessarily have right now. Don't listen to them, keep it up it's very much appreciated.

No. It’s just war.

Absolutely. We've had generations of Europeans now who've known nothing but peace with the nightmare Balkans seemingly forgotten in recent history rather than being a sad reminder to people of just how god awful a modern European war is. Yet people have apparently forgotten already, lulled by the relative "cleanliness" of what Western forces show on the news whilst ignoring the devastation caused by battles like Fallujah where Western forces virtually levelled the city, which must have looked to the locals just a horrific as the Russian attacks are to the Ukrainians.

I also find it disheartening to realise just how disconnected from "Real Life" some people are when they're shouting about "we must do something because 'it's not fair' to people", which shows what I think is a stunning lack of maturity (or grasp of what the real world is like) that they're still thinking in terms of "it's not fair" etc. It's not a contest with rules and regulation you have to abide by (as much as we shout about the Geneva Convention etc) and the Russians certainly don't give a flying poop what those people might think; they're scared of dying and will do anything they can to stay alive irrespective of who gets hurt, just so long as they get to live.

Now, let me be clear, it's far from my intention to say this is specifically about Colonel_Klinck, it is not. I can only have personal conjecture and no certainty as to his origins, as with most on public forums, but in my opinion, some who continually post derogatory comments about the UK must have a marked differentiation between where they are living now and where their heart still lies.

Quite what the UK offers, or their long term goals are, to override their heart and personal values in order to live in this country, is also open to conjecture. Given their hatred of many facets of the UK and her history, there must be a pressing need to be be here, yet be so openly vindictive about their adopted country's history and culture.

You would happily have a situation where criticism of the government gets you 15 years in jail. I can think of a country that would suit you down to the ground. In case you didn't notice, the government isn't the country, it might be in Russia but its isn't here.

Why are so many of Russia's tanks in Ukraine so antiquated looking, like cold war relics? They've had the best part of two decades to build new kit.

Is it the case they've just sent their second grade kit to Ukraine?
One ruble for the tank, one for the manager at the tank factory, 5 for the owner of the factory, 50 for the russian general who awarded the contract....

Their system was such a mess at the end of the cold war that it was routine for warehouses to have locks that required two keys to try and prevent theft by staff, and it's not really got much better in many ways, except that a lot of the theft has been higher up the chain, so stuff either never gets bought but is on the books, or inferior parts are substituted.

Apparently whole swathes of parts and equipment that is legally required to be made inside Russia entirely (so every part is Russian made) aren't, everything from screws and ball bearings, to Tractors (which it turned out were bought as kits from another country and only assembled in Russia), and when it is found out usually the manager of the factory is found guilty, whilst the owners and people who arranged it walk.

No. China knows that time is on its side. Let Russia lose, with no harbour but China; keep building the ties with Africa and South America and trust that sheer weight of population will count in the end.

Russia is a weak, fading, former superpower. China doesn't need Russia to become the World's greatest superpower it needs time.

Yeah, that's the problem with dictators having powerful militaries is that they work on much longer timescales for their strategic objectives. They are a different league to tin pot dictators like Gaddafi and Mugabe and a real threat to world peace.

While the West becomes more digitalized with talk of crypto, metaverse etc, China continues to secure more tangible resources. In a war of atoms they would probably win right now.

I shudder to think 15 years into the future, when America and Europe are plugged into VR most of their lives, how vulnerable the physical world will become.

Another one bites the dust...
