The Russians are looking for a quick way out. They are dangling a carrot so that they can call this 'special operation' a win. Ukraine shouldn't agree to their terms, the Russians are already backed into a corner with their logistical issues

Agree on the terms, "never trust Russians"- Otto Von Bismarck.

But Putin is still going for winning this, no matter the cost.

edit: a military win

Putin has no other option at the moment, having backed himself into a corner by playing a sh**ty hand. Last nights PBS doc is worth a watch. To borrow one of the quotes "He will grind the country (Russia) down to a fine, fine ash".

If there's a negotiated peace (and it's a big if), Putin needs a concession where he can save face. Which is likely why there's noises being made over the last 24 hours about Ukraine not joining NATO. Gives Putin the wiggle room to back down from WW3 and merely end up with Cold War II : Electric Boogaloo.

Its entirely possible to win and still fail. The cost to Russia means this has been a failure irrespective of the outcome.

Their goal is to stop Ukraine from joining Nato, this was said very early on right at the start of the invasion. It just got drowned out by all the anti Russian rhetoric.

If Putins goal is achieved then we can lie and say it's still a loss for him as he has had higher casualties but I find it hard to believe that isn't a price worth paying for him.

The victory we do have is the long term effect of the sanctions but that is only if everyone sticks to them, my feeling is that in a year or 2 the sanctions will slowly start to ease up but that remains to be seen.

I think many people who post here are a bit deluded as to how the war is going on as all their updates come from twitter and they are taken as gospel.

I expect some kind of formal agreement not to join NATO although I also expect Russian pressure to try and prevent possible EU membership too.
Not sure on the rest, I assume Russia will want to hold on to the territory they have gained in the East.

I think your probably being generous in suggesting that sanctions will start to ease in 1-2 years, I expect some areas will see sanctions almost immediately lifted if a deal is signed (and Russia pulls out) - especially in areas where its harming both Russia and the rest (for example Aviation)

That's what it started off as and what most sane people thought he was after. Then Putin went full retard and decided on Sh*tzkrieg as he's on some mission to rebuild the Russian Empire.

The price of not compromising is too high. Thousands are dying daily, and the cost of reconstruction goes up all the time. Thus Ukraine will compromise, because the alternative is unacceptable.
So in the end Ukraine will be a neutral country with security guarantees it was never going to join NATO anyway and its far too corrupt to be let into the EU.

It was one of the claims, others from memory being that it was to stop the genocide of the Russian ethnic group, or that it was to denzify the Ukraine, it really depended on which of the official Russian causes for them invading a sovereign country you wanted to believe, and which hour you paid attention to the Russian lies.

IIRC the exact claim was more to stop Nato putting weapons on the Russian border, which kind of ignored the other Nato countries that were on the Russian border.

:cry::cry::cry::cry:

Russia invaded a country to stop them joining NATO?

With Putin still around, no chance. Sanctions will be there for a decade plus until the Russians can proved under a change of leadership that they can be trusted. Sanctions won't be undone and the doors flung open quickly as they were when the Soviet Union collapsed, as we can all see the result.

I disagree that it is a "victory" for us. More like a burden that we are going to bear (and most likely for a short while, the sanction quietly disappear.) The only entity that gains from this is China and Saudi Arabia.

One thing to come out of this war is that its humbled the Russians a bit and give them a bloody nose so they will think twice about ever doing anything like this in the future.

Then prepare for WW3 because there is no-way Putin or anyone else in their government are just going to roll over and take it.
