That's why I wrote this in the post you replied to.
"Putin shouldnt get to dictate"
I just believed it would have been better to agree than end up in the situation we are in where Ukraine is getting invaded.

Refugees arriving in Lviv are telling all sorts of horrific stories of executions.

Weren't the Azov basically a direct response to the 2014 invasion when the Ukraine was so desperate that they accepted any one with experience and a willingness to fight?
almost like when you're fighting for your life as a nation you're willing to accept fighters you'd normally not touch.

From what I understand the Ukranians had been taking steps to reduce the need for them for the last few years.

Yea lots of rubbish started spewing out of the mouths of the Russians to further justify their invasion but the NATO membership was always key.
Russia were never going to allow Ukraine to become part of NATO and I just feel it would have been better to agree to this than stand where we are.

Yes I know people should stand up to bullies and all that but the cost to stand up to this bully seems a little too much.
 
Sadly any terms of neutrality and limits on its armed forces are simply Russia gaming the battlefield - with the high cost of this invasion and desire to end bloodshed there will be a push to agree to it but it won't end well.

yea they are officially part of the National Guard, they are well armed as any other part of the Ukraine military, they got all the western weapons too.

They are the ones holding Mariupol so likely the most effective force Ukraine has.

Azov fighters are Ukraine's greatest weapon and may be its greatest threat

They sure weren't wrong about them being Ukraines greatest weapon, and the threat becomes more real than ever if getting rid of the Nazis is one of putins peace demands.

Ukraine would have to fight itself to get rid of them, and what if zelensky wants a peace deal but Azov wants to keep fighting?


is anyone really convinced he has full control over the country?

Well definitely if they end up coming to the same agreement at the end of this, not to join nato. It’s why Ukraine is now in a difficult position in the negotiation too.

Cat is out the bag, even though they have <2% support generally, with the likes of Azov now - irony being Putin is as much to blame for that as anyone if not more so than most. Dunno what shape they'll survive in though once this is all over.

If they played it smart and obfuscated some of the less desirable aspects along with a big political push they could capitalise on this situation, assuming some kind of win, to garner much wider support for their cause which will bring a lot of problems for Ukraine if they try to suppress them in the future and again ironically it is Russia that has had a big hand in enabling that.

It doesn't matter what Russia does, it matters how the West chooses to support Ukraine and how Ukraine manages to rebuild and manage their economy. Russia is a basket case country, even without sanctions, and it's not going to get better.

Russia could have coexisted quite reasonably with the west over the decades since 1990 becoming rich and powerful. They just managed to elect the biggest headcase, soviet union groupie imaginable and let him stay in power.
