Russia is simply attempting to dictate the rules and stall. Paused it will regroup and seek to continue where it left off. maybe in few years time.
It’s almost impossible to trust him as a leader given the demonstration of his respect for any agreement. I suspect that putin is also hoping the terms sow dissatisfaction over the next 5 years.

Xi has basically said “behave yourselves” to russia, belarus and ukraine.

I think Putin is realising the clock is ticking - he might not be keen to put things off even 5 let alone more years.

This is offensive/defensive disadvantage/advantage, Ukraine isn't going to run out of troops or weapons, Russia is and every body that returns home is another reason for Russia to cut it's losses and leave just like they did in Afghanistan.

The Ukrainian people have shown extreme bravery fighting the Russian army the way they have but people just aren't very realistic here. Zelensky wouldn't be close to agreeing to all these terms if it was as easy as people here are making out.

The men are held up in cold buildings which are getting bombarded, their country is getting blown to bits. Their wives and children are trekking across countries looking for strangers to live with.

WTF should they put up with this any longer, end it now and let the women and children come home.

At least it is not a surrender nor is it a puppet government, Ukraine and the West can prepare better now we have all seen Russia in action.

It will not "end" now if they fail to defeat their attackers. It will just pause and the next time will be even worse.

That peace agreement won't be worth the paper it's written on.

This IS what a "prepared" Ukraine looks like. If they have to "demilitarize" and not join NATO, well, we are back to square one or worse.

And in WW2 the same - yet it was considered worth fighting fascism.

if ukraine stop then the attention goes away, everybody more prepared and putin has won.

Well they are not part of NATO anyway and the demilitarize is the one part where they don't agree.
It's a deal getting made, they don't have to concede to all demands.

Also with all these sanctions, it will take a while for Russia to recover.

Well clearly you didnt get the memo that Russia can not be trusted. and the other memo that said weeks ago that Russia would push for a ceasefire not because they are kind hearted but they need it to replenish their army and supplies.
So given we knew Russia was going to do this at this exact moment in time and the reasons why they would do it, it would be absurd to accept any agreement from the Kremlin.

Clearly I did miss this when you posted and even now I've missed it as I've not read anywhere that Russia is requesting a ceasefire.

Yes I didn't want this war to happen.
I wanted Ukraine to agree not to join NATO to avoid the war.

This was Putins original complaint and why he threatened Ukraine with military action.
