All the ex-SSR's have a decent amount of compatible equipment for Ukraine to use, but presumably some of it is actually required by those countries for their own defence and of course they'll all have instructions written in different languages as well as upgrades that Ukraine might not be familiar with.

Should stick it all on ebay and let Zelensky bid on it :D

Then Russia can threaten to bomb ebay instead.

Done away with the rifle barrel which I think meant they have a more powerful cannon, and the tank itself is significantly faster than its predecessor. A whole host of other improvements too.

The new smooth-bore barrel allows it to fire a greater range of ammunition types than the older rifled barrels by adding newer "smart" shells (distance fused HE rounds etc) whilst also allowing more NATO integration with basic ammunition types too. I don't however see anything mentioned about the engine being upgraded, just the cooling system and suspension so I'm not sure if "significantly faster" is accurate.

The slide on the MOD website says "engine improvements" without any detail

I wonder if the newer tanks like the Challenger 3 have any sort of counter measures against Javellin/NLAW missiles. The tank as a fighting machine does seem a bit redundant because of these weapons now.
One of the problems with designing tanks is that it takes much less time/investment to produce a new anti-tank weapon than it does to redesign a tank to be resistant to it, after which you have to retool the production line for the changes, then get the mods out to tanks in the field (if you even bother).

Tanks like the Challenger 3 would naturally be more resistant to Javelin/NLAW missiles however as those systems were designed to be strongest against Soviet style tanks. This is one of the many problems Russia are facing, their modern anti-armour weapons were designed for destroying NATO tanks/APC/etc and Ukraine are using ones designed for destroying Soviet style tanks/APC/etc which are the ones Russia use.

As a note though, while it's the NLAW/Javelin/etc grabbing all the headlines, Ukraine are also seeing a lot of success with their Soviet era anti-armor weapons against APCs and 70's/early 80's tanks, though this is less due to the enduring power of the weapons and more due to Russia choosing to field outdated/dilapidated garbage in the first place.

Here we have the dictator carefully watching over his army.

Most of Russian oligarchs Yachts have found a shelter in Turkish marinas, also Turkey wont sanction anything Russian. Is this on the news in the UK?

Hehe Turkey has land and sea boarders with Russia and EU, they're bound to play happy campers with both. They are to trade what Swiss are to Bank secret bank accounts. They were trading with the Russians and the Vikings long before the documented wars of Europe. There's even Viking Runic graffiti in some of the old buildings in Turkey.

This is worrying:

There were fears of a tactical nuke hitting Poland but the obvious risk of a NATO response and then the massive risk of escalation if that were to happen. Hitting Azerbaijan with a tactical nuke on the other hand has a lower risk for Russia... though the potential knock-on effect of NATO member Turkey going absolutely apoplectic over it.

IF Putin actually does want to use a nuke somewhere as a warning to NATO/show of force etc.. then Azerbaijan could be a target as it doesn't prompt an automatic NATO obligation to respond, annoyingly they have been the aggressor here too.

Obviously how NATO or Turkey react to an event like this brings its own risks.

The combined agricultural might of Russia and Ukraine, and it's huge impact on global wheat prices alone, makes this a power play for the future as carbon fuels decline. It's got to be part of the long term plan.

I was talking to a wheat farmer yesterday. Bloody nightmare to decide what to do for them. Obviously burning 100s of litres of expensive diesel a week to spread extremely expensive fertiliser is not a great place to be right now.

However the Black Sea area also massively dictates wheat prices, which are also sky high at the moment. But the risk is that by the time they pull the expensive wheat out the fields, the price has dropped if the Ukrainian situation ends and wheat production isn't impacted as much as expected at the end of it.

As an side, he said in his experience the farming community love Clarkson for what he's done for educating people about these constant gambles that farmers are making on climate change and geopolitics!

The byzantine empire had a viking guard unit called the varangian guard, this would predate the ottoman empire and Turkey by a long way.

Biden really screwed up with that 'he cannot remain in power' quip. Any language that sounds remotely like a call for regime change just plays straight into Putin's hands. The White House has walked it back, but the damage is already done.

In the Hagia Sophia church thats now a mosque, yes.

Shhh, you can't say that any criticism of the Biden means you're obviously a rabid right wing Trump devotee.

just the semiconductor technology for weapons control - don't see how russia have kept up with that, unless it's all illicit use of Western fabs (N korea ballistic missile similarly)
The covid vaccine race, was another manifestation of technology they have.

Germany has been selling electronic components to Russia that's used to build tanks and weapons

LOL, the Byzantine empire had trade with vikings, a vikings dream was to sell british/german/french slaves to Constantinople for gold. Ánd what makes Turkey special, the whole alliance is on high alert and pay a heavy price for this war, why are the turkish let go just like this. Are we an alliance or not?
