If the sanctions are removed with Russia occupying 40-50% of the country then it would only serve to justify further incursion with Russia continuing to find ways to protect themselves in the future from the consequences.

However, it is very likely to be a condition of peace negotiations assuming there's any chance that they can move forward which the Kremlin will no doubt attempt to use to portray the West as wanting to keep the war going if Ukraine agrees. Obviously we can hardly be letting decisions be made in Kyiv about our own policies, but this does appear to be an option for Putin.

At some point the balancing act between supporting Ukraine and harming Russia is going to become rather wobbly, faltering isn't really an option so what will we do when the time comes?

Make sure you turn it upside down first.

So Ukraine PM pretty much has conceded joining NATO a pipe dream and willing to go neutral status, probably with significant loss of territory and losing military.

What has really riled me is Truss confirming that pretty much as soon as this ends the sanctions end, so no long lasting consequences for Russia, assuming other countries do same.
We don't know exactly what 'as this ends' really means though. If Russia pulls back and Ukraine is restored to it's boarders as at 24th February then maybe there is a case for some sanctions to be lifted but a simply ceasing of military activities whilst still occupying 1/4 of Ukraine I would like to think is not acceptable under any circumstances to our leaders (and what do you do with Mariupol which Ukraine still just about holds).

If the war ends… how long do you think sanctions should go on for?
What’s the end point?

When Putin is dead or gone, and Russia have left Crimea. Some mild lifting in response to the end of hostilities is appropriate, but the bulk of sanctions should remain.

Amazing that when these billionaires become persona non grata and their funds get seized they suddenly want to help. Screw them.

Or alternatively take as much money from them as they'll give you to help rebuild your Country, thats what I would consider rather than childishly saying "screw you" which, whilst it make you feel better in the short term, won't help the people of Ukraine one single little bit.

Do you have a source for that as I do not see the UK/ US lifting sanctions until Russia is fully out of Ukraine and reparations are in place.

The same people who pushed Putin to power? Sure that won't have any strings attached?

It seems, contrary to the opinion of many on this forum, this insignificant little speck of an island does have a bit of clout...Even outside of the EU. Who'd have thought it? And getting rid of the "orange man" and his claimed faux pas doesn't mean "grey man" isn't more than enough capable of causing international level "mis-speaking" of his own. At least orange man delivered with conviction and not like someone responding weakly to the last rites ;) It's the way you tell 'em.

What Biden said, off the cuff, from what was a pretty good speech was, while being true, a faux pas diplomatically speaking.
I don’t think, with everything else that had been said, that anyone ever really thought he was advocating Putin be forced out by direct external action. White House clarified it soon enough, just to underscore that.

The difference with the orange man is that he’s only capable of speaking off the cuff. Mostly because he hasn’t a clue what he’s talking about in terms of the detail.
Here’s a recent quote from his interview with Fox News when they asked him what he’d be doing different. Something a critic and potential presidential rival of Biden would surely have ready in their back pocket:
Well what I would do, we have tremendous military capability and what we can do without 44-year-old jets, what we can do is enormous, and we should be doing it and helping them to survive & they’re doing an amazing job.

I’m glad Biden is in charge given the alternative.
