Fuel price discussion thread (was ‘chaos’)

Thing that ****** me off is the £99 limit still being in place for pay at pump.

One of the garages I use a lot still has £45 contactless limit which is a pain with current prices and I'm pretty sure has a £45 limit for pay at pump as well but not 100% on that as I never pay at pump there.

I do get a pretty massive difference in my Volvo, so I guess it very much depends on vehicle.

It is a 1.6 turbo petrol, mapped (official Volvo map) to 180hp, I used to drive fast get about 350-380 miles per tank, now getting 520-550 miles per tank driving miss daisy.

Admittedly that is more or less going from one extreme to another.
What's this tank business.

Talk mpg :p

Saw prices at the Tesco petrol station today getting close to £2 a litre and wondered what I had spent fueling the car this year. Looked at my records and for the year to date I have spent £39.99 for roughly 4000 miles of driving! :p

Race track would be single figure mpg.

It’s amazing when following people who drive slow thinking they are economical without being aware of how badly they still drive. Poor anticipation with excessive braking. Often stopping at roundabouts for no reason.

The annoying ones are those on the motorway in the middle lane. I’ll sit at 74mph in my van with cruise control engaged, behind me is someone who has been following me for a mile or 2. Lane 1 becomes free so I move over and sure as the sun rises the car behind, who has been following me rather than pull into lane 3, decides to speed up and overtake. I see it all the time so much so I overtook the same van 4-5 times the other day within about 15-20 miles, I didn’t change my speed at all.

And then they decide to slow down again forcing you to overtake again. Rinse and repeat!
Yes they speed up and slow down depending on what’s in front of them rather than maintain a speed and use lanes.

In my car I can drive briskly and efficiently if I don’t have to keep slowing down for dawdlers. Get out the way you’re killing polar bears.

I see that all the time and it grinds my gears too. Worse are the ones that follow you for 2 miles, then decide to go into the other lane to overtake you, pull in and then slow down to a slower speed than you here doing originally.

proliferation of works vans speeding is a thing since petrol prices .... those are the folks who don't think they pay for their petrol, versus others who are showing moderation,
(fuel cost is becoming more significant versus billed time on-site too)

cruise control - optimal efficiency on motorways isn't achieved with cruise control , unless you have a cruise control using geo data that is utilizing the rise/fall of the road,
probably need scanias viewpoint on this

I agree in theory but for the vast majority of drivers variable cruise control give better fuel economy than manual driving.

I know with my driving style I find it difficult to beat my adaptive cruise control. The fact it also is built into whether its running on electric or motor (hybrid car) and uses the gps and maps to know when its coming up to a bend or junction so slows down with the least amount of braking makes if very very hard to beat manually. Its very good at coasting when it needs to.

Plus its so much more relaxing to drive.

I find the opposite with mine, probably partly due to the Seat system not being particularly effective. I stopped relying on it recently switching back to using it as if it was regular cruise and I'm sure my economy has gone up a few MPG by reacting to the traffic ahead not just the car in front.
