Give it a couple of months and things will look grim for Russia. The people however will suffer, the kremlin wont give a ****
The people will not care as long as they believe the sacrifice is for Mother Russia, we need to stop trying to apply Western logic & mindset into that of Russians, they are wired completely different and many long for a return to the Soviet Union

There’s no talk of nuclear war on here anymore.

Have we all accepted that it’s a non issue now?

Even with the excessive news on Russian State TV regarding nukes, it simply means words are all they have now. Their conventional army sucks, so all they can talk about is how great their nukes are in an attempt to make it look like they are still 'a power'.

I would not say a non-issue, there just isn't much new to say about it and slightly less uncertainty than when things first kicked off and it was a complete unknown how Russia would react to Western arming Ukraine.

On the flip side it back fired as the rest of Europe rearms and joins NATO.

It really depends if Russia ever had any intention to attack a NATO member country, or the Scandinavian countries.

If they didn't, those European countries have significant additional, unforseen, spending of unprovable worth going into a recession.

I'm guessing russia's medium term goal was a quick landgrab in ukraine, and no more than that. They have got a bloody nose, and massive sanctions, as a result but can maybe achieve a limited success on territorial expansion.

My further guess is we're looking at another cyprus/ idlib situation in the medium term.

I don't buy a quick land grab - looking at the composition of equipment built up they were banking on it going somewhat like Crimea IMO, thinking it would be largely bloodless with Ukraine putting down their weapons when met by force with just a few hold out army groups or individual cities that they intended to encircle and pummel into submission with heavy artillery. Allowing Russia to quickly install a puppet regime in Kyiv.

I'm 100% sure Russia didn't expect the Ukranian resistance, didn't expect "the west" to suddenly care so much about Ukraine or the massive sanctions.

Also 100% sure Russia has no plans to attack a NATO country. Putin lost his pet president and wanted to seize control again. I'm sure he dreams about collecting the ex-soviet states.

Turkey has been a candidate since 1987 :p

Mind you, there is more incentive for some countries than others to sort themselves into meeting standards. Like Russia invading specifically because you have no one backing you up.

Yeah, pretty much agree. I don't think Russia expected much resistance, particularly in the east. I think they expected a swift capitulation, with little time for external actors to act.

That's what I meant by a quick landgrab. Sorry, i could have been clearer.

I don't disagree.

As I said, I'm expecting Russia to hold a chunk of Ukraine for the foreseeable. I think Russia may have designs on increasing that in the short-term, but there will come a point where they will be content to cease their "special operation".

It's anyone's guess when and where Russia might decide to consolidate, but I think they will have already given up on kiev and odesa.
