Shouldn't make much if any difference in terms of how close cars can follow - it shouldn't affect how the bodywork and wings generate downforce (and the cleaned up "wake" they generate), but will obviously impact how much downforce a car can generate (meaning more sliding around, and potentially more tyre wear for those affected)
It will have some effect, although the wake generated by wings etc will still be the same the underfloor downforce was designed to be better preserved within the tunnels, thus also making for closer racing. With reduced ground effect, by raising the ride height, the car will be less 'stuck to the floor'. Mercedes know this so they wanted the ride height rule changed for all the cars..

This, RB will benefit, Mercedes attempts to pressure the FIA into making changes will backfire on them...

To be honest this just feels like a roll of the dice from Merc. They don't seem to know how to fix it other than raise the ride height so they've moaned to see what happens/try and get a global nerf and it looks like they'll just have to raise the ride height anyway... As a poster has already said. I wouldn't mind Merc losing to someone but RB are just bleurgh. :D Much rather it was to Ferrari and that's saying something.

They might be loosing to a few more teams this weekend if they're no longer allowed to slam it dangerously close to the ground.

The teams that have got a handle on the porpoising without resorting to running on bumpstops are going to have a good weekend.

You can see from this chart which teams it's going to effect the most (can anyone find a similar chart for more recent races?)

This really does feel like a massive backfire from Mercedes. It's just going to drop them further back I suspect.
I honestly don't agree with Merc on this. You can't cry foul because the car you designed is not capable of running fast safely.

FIA have played a blinder, but it's just going to ensure RB run away with it now.

I just hope they continue to let the RB boys mix it up to keep things interesting up front!

Merc have so had a word with George since his first random Sky encounter today where he was more commending over the FIA changes.

Now in the most recent press pack interviews he's blaming other teams that the changes didn't go far enough and angry about it.

I get toeing the company line but its interesting to see the contrast just hours later.

Merc are crying over the new rule.

They have made errors in their design this year!

Imagine if they had no issue? They would be still be moaning about something!

Safe to say all top teams do this. The bottom teams are more busy managing their budgets and sponsors. Had the zero side pod design really worked then it would have been someone else complaining about those.

they been paying close attention to red bull over the last few seasons so know how to do it effectively

I like this track. Unfortunately time difference means I'll not be able to watch the race. :(
I really hope this is the end of Mercedes' season. Never a fan of a mid-season rule change.

Just looking at the practice times. Hoping Alonso can keep this page going!

This is definitely the end of Merc’s season. They need a different concept because this car looks like a dud and it doesn’t look like they know how to fix it.

Hamilton confirming in interviews that they tried a new floor between FP1 and FP2 and it didn’t work. They also tried a few different setups which were equally poor :(

Interesting to hear Croft actually point out Horners juxtaposition to him with regards cost cap increase versus rule changes mid season,

Tbh I think Horners got nothing to worry about, either way, unless he knows they're way over budget.

I'd be interested to know how all the top teams are scamming their finances, or hiding costs. I don't for a minute believe they'll be changing how they operate.
What's the penalty for going over the cap?

Missed the practice but it sounds like the Mercs are a dud then. So basically all the FIA have done is make sure if a car that’s porpoising heavily already, they penalise them by forcing them to increase the ride height? Thus making a bad car even slower.

If you ignore my pro-Merc bias that’s no good for anyone, unless you’re RB right? No good for the competition either.

I still maintain these ground effect cars are dumb as **** :o
