The "Top Gear", Season 24/25/26 thread

agreed, I'd far rather they promote jack rix the magazine editor who does their youtube videos. The segments with both him and chris harris at once on youtube are great.

Haven't watched any of the more recent stuff with him and Chris - but I found him very doing it "by the numbers", i.e. someone who has seen a lot of people presenting and knows how to emulate that but isn't a natural, and a bit bland on camera back along.

Freddie I think has grown into the role but Paddy it just doesn't feel like his lane.

Only reason I bother to watch it any more is due to Chris.

agree on that last part. I think the current implementation of TG would be dead were it not for him. I've watched his stuff wherever he's been and it's always good, Autocar, Evo, The Drive, His solo stuff on youtube etc.. all great.

Thought the trucks were interesting (but I have an interest in them) and fair play top them for getting their licences, but the whole episode seemed like it was an advertisement for becoming a truck driver. My timelines could be wrong but it looked like it was filmed around the time there was a lot of publicity around the shortage of drivers in the UK

Well, the point was rather 'there's a shortage, so what's it like?' so it made sense for them to comment on what it was like... no? I realise it would be coming away from the entertainment factor and maybe too educational, but I would have been quite interested to see what sort of training they went through and how easy/hard it was.

They just showed all the good bits and trucks 90% of drivers will never even get to drive.

They totally missed the miserable useless sods at RDC's, London traffic, getting caught short and a 40 hour week being part time ;)

And the 9hrs time off after a 15 hour shift and not seeing your loved ones for potentially 5 days or more, fuel being stolen... And then you remember what we get paid

I didn't think it was that bad. I agree the Lotus segment seemed a bit **** compared to the usual, but on the whole it was OK TV.

I've just got to the truck stop bit... one of the reasons we lost a lot of drivers at work is because that is NOT the average experience, not even close.

Got around to watching last night,
Basically they messed around in some older - and rather “blinged up” trucks then had brand new top of the range trucks - most of which your average driver won’t get near in a career - to play with.

They drove along saying how the trucks are great and popping into the best truck stop I have ever seen, telling us its a great lifestyle.

Found the comments on the trucks being comparable to a Chiron, S-Class etc a bit laughable, most truckers will tell you for example Mercedes trucks are utter garbage, a far cry from once they once were, no mention for example how the electronic mirrors become useless in wet weather conditions and have a habit of frequently breaking, nor did the DAF throw up warnings lights like a Christmas tree - most do - the Scania is an epic piece of kit but, like I say, unless you get a job in very heavy haulage (such as moving earthmoving equipment etc) or go into international driving, you won’t get near a V8 never mind a 770S…

Then they drove around an airfield with helicopters on the back of trailers loaded in a way they’d never be in real life….

They then drove off through a bit of bad weather saying perhaps not such a good lifestyle to a race track where they blasted round in a few race trucks… They seemed impressed how the trucks handled Welsh hills pulling 5 ton loads and not one of them under 500bhp - your average fleet truck runs less power and pulls a lot more weight, easiest things to drive lightly loaded, very different at full weight…

I didnt expect them do be at a distribution centre at 3am and forced to wait around for 5 hours having struggled to do a blind reverse onto a poorly lit loading dock nor having a sly **** into a bag when stuck overnight in the cab in a layby having found no spaces at services or truck stops or experienced cars doing anything to try to get past you, but still, it’s entertainment (supposedly) and far from a documentary although it was better (just!) than the Stobart tv show from a few years back, it was about as accurate as describing Life on Mars as what being a police officer is like. :D

Overall one of the better episodes of the series although having said that, so far this series has been dire so hardly reaching any new high watermark!

One thing I wasn’t expecting was McGuinness to be dressed up as a lookalike of the Irish guy who was involved with the awful Chinese immigrants incident in West Thurrock a while back!

The usual TG dross I’m afraid.

This season isn't getting a very good write up is it?

Did anyone else watch last nights episode?

Again, I didn't feel it was anywhere near as good as it should have been. Why bother with a review of an American electric pickup if it's not coming to the UK? Or is this just to satisfy their American audience?

More importantly did anyone else spot the poor Diablo is the scrapyard section?

Quite agree, seems to be open goal after open goal missed, last nights very much like the previous truck edition, could - and should - have been so much better…

And yes, spotted that Diablo, assuming it’s a real one, I wonder what’s the back story on that? - I’m more interested in that than TG as a whole tbh… :D

I was thinking this too re the Diablo. Actually, had they simply continued to play footage of the cars stacked in the scrapyard, I’d have been more interested.

I thought the topic of old sub £500 cars was interesting, but they totally missed the mark with the tank proving ground and racing around a scrapyard - who cares? It was the first time I thought the seemingly bizarre past antics of Clarkson and co. would have been more appropriate.

Very disappointing.
