I watched a video last night, where they questioned whether Russia have even made a concerted effort to properly suppress Ukrainian air defenses, judging from how air power was being fielded in Ukraine. Again which is in contrast to more Western doctrine of seeking and destroying radar/SAM sites as a matter of priority.

It is weird what is going on with air power in Ukraine, though maybe not so surprising really. On paper Russia should be able to project overwhelming air power in Ukraine, that is not the reality we are seeing. The smattering of SU-34s fielded don't seem to be doing well, a large amount are old versions of SU-25s, Mi-8 helis which haven't been upgraded since the late 70s, etc. etc.

Even with the reality being Russia has many aircraft not combat ready, lack of experienced pilots, lack of parts, their most hyped aircraft often only being serviceable in single digit numbers the efforts in Ukraine have still been hugely underwhelming while Ukraine has limited functional air force and limited air defences.

I am not an expert however is it due to the sheer amount of different surface to air solutions from many different countries? So they can't adapt? Dunno. So different technology ranging from old to modern?

Curious to know more about this too. :)

Having a quick Google it is around £3 for your average size pack of butter in Russia currently... though some places it is spiking in price well above that due to shortages.
That’s only cause the rouble is so strong. It’s a bit of an irrelevant measure tbh.

They had a crack at it in the opening barrage of strikes but with limited success as Ukraine had repositioned a lot of it in the few days before and their accuracy seemed off for some reason - possibly due to lack of calibration or possibly sabotage.

Russian Tactical Air Doctrine has never been about gaining 100% air superiority, even back in the Cold War era when they had vastly more aircraft. They will only attempt to gain temporary superiority whilst hitting specific targets far behind enemy lines and will then scuttle back to just having local superiority over the FLOT (Front Line Of Troops) where most of their tactical airpower is focused, effectively being used like flying artillery as an airborne tool of the Army.

NATO on the other hand operates vastly differently and for vastly different reasons so people saying "Russia couldn't even................" etc are missing the point, Russia is doing exactly what it's doctrine tells it to do, but it's rapidly found out that the doctrine its based its entire tactical flying around is garbage in the modern age.

Sounds like typical pro-Russian cope tbh.. as Roff pointed out above they made an effort in the initial stages of this current operation to attack Ukraine's air defences and air force, fortunately lots of the (working parts of) the latter had been moved. They failed in their attempts and they're now in a positon where Russian pilots are too nervous to fly over most of the country, they'll provide close air support in the East and they'll fire long-range weapons without actually entering Ukrainian airspace.

Re the Rouble, plenty of vids on youtube showing rouble prices for supermarket goods between 50% and 200% higher than before the commencement of operations. Then you need to assume how many are working or paid as much since then - probably smaller numbers on both counts.

Lot of Russian government/presidential planes up doing weird flight paths currently - not sure what is going on there - possibly related to diplomats being expelled and problems getting flight plans. One for instance had a destination of Tehran (maybe miscoding) but diverted to Minsk.

Above is a commentary on industrial warfare.

IMO the West generally can still scale up military industry to a massive scale very quickly if it came to it, the problem is persuading populations as to the necessity of the cost, effort and man power required. And the skill base and experience required is ever eroding.

Which is interesting as during the Cold War era, they would have had America/NATO as the main threats which you would have thought would push towards having to gain a certain level of air superiority and therefore influence doctrine. We've known since WW2 that air power is absolutely vital to effective military operation on the ground & sea. But this "wing" of the Russian armed forces seems to get the least attention, except for their stand off nuclear capable bombers. Which is pretty useless in a more conventional setting.
