Which is interesting as during the Cold War era, they would have had America/NATO as the main threats which you would have thought would push towards having to gain a certain level of air superiority and therefore influence doctrine. We've known since WW2 that air power is absolutely vital to effective military operation on the ground & sea. But this "wing" of the Russian armed forces seems to get the least attention, except for their stand off nuclear capable bombers. Which is pretty useless in a more conventional setting.

Russia's hardware designs have largely been around total war with the West - with more focus on indiscriminately knocking things out the air with their S-300, etc. complexes than any finesse.

(If nothing can move in the air they can put their artillery and tank numbers to work on the ground).

Which is likely why their air traffic takes such a wide birth as per https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/t...howing-attacks-similar.18582449/post-35691873 :s

Miniscule point ?
I thought the whole point of the Ukrainians putting up a fight is that they don't want to give up that (miniscule you say)percentage of their country.

Someone call Zelensky and tell him it's a miniscule amount of land and Scougar doesn't care for it also Dowie doesn't think the Russians have taken any land so he has no idea what this war is about.
Word games again. Your miniscule point, not their miniscule land. /Rolleyes.

Are you five? Grow up.

Puts a huge amount of eggs in one basket, with lack of overlapping capability. Which in the context of the war in Ukraine is fine as they themselves lack in the aerial department.

LOL at the Sky reporter asking a Ukrainian soldier fresh back from the front lines what his message to NATO was... don't think she was expecting that answer...

Stop being a bunch of f word pussies and help I believe was the message.

The fighting in the east is really highlighting the gap between the powers. Drip feeding arms isn't going to cut it, if we're not going to get directly involved we should be sending them every we have to do the fighting for us.

The Czech Republic will supply Bivoi reconnaissance drones to Ukraine.

Interesting comment and the first signs of any change in stance. Though not sure how to take that "can be different tactics".

Possibly a tacit acknowledgement that Russia is closing on having to make some hard decisions if they want to sustain the current campaign.

As rough as it might be and somewhat demoralising there is no strategic advantage in expending more forces than you have to currently on this front - inflict as many casualties on the enemy as possible while minimising losses in a slow withdrawal while concentrating on attacking from the sides and targeting their supply lines. Meeting the Russians head on here just expends a lot of soldiers without being hugely beneficial to the overall war.
