Road Cycling

Is being a Pogcar clone an insult or compliment? If I was picking I’d be more close to a Dumoulin myself… Indurain really but I’m not that talented…

Not particularly the wrong size then. What made you have the seat so low before?

I didn't think it was that low, mind you I have a knackered right ankle from my motorcycling days. It's full of pins and plates and has very limited mobility. And it really didn't seem that low, I put a before and after pics up in the bike pics section. Its not like I had the seat post slammed

I went out for one of my evening rides before, was going down a quiet country lane, started to climb a hill and I could see a van coming the other way. Didn't think much of it, plenty of room and it was coming the other way. As it went past I felt something strike my side. Took me a few moments to stop and realise that that absolute c%$"t had decided to throw an empty coke can at me. Seriously, what is bloody wrong with people these days? I know I live in Wigan and it has its fair share of six-fingered banjo players, but I was fuming the whole ride home.

I can't remember if I've mentioned this. I'm getting creaks from somewhere along the drive train. I've tried to remove as many possibilities as possible, rightened the pedals, tightened my cleats (this made it a bit better) tightened the rear axel (this also made it a little better) but I still have creaking. It seems worse earlier in a ride. It's definitely when I'm climbing, maybe slower cadence and higher power. If I free wheel for even a split second it often makes it stop for a while.

Is it simply time for a new BB? I've done about 12k miles on this one.
Could very well be one of the BB bearings, especially with those symptoms. Also could be as simple as a piece of grit/dirt between two flexing/moving surfaces...!

Clean axle, grease & tighten. Check cassette lockring is tight. Clean drivechain. Clean crank spindle & around BB cups/covers. If removing cranks to clean them, then worth removing cassette and cleaning that & the freehub splines too so it's all done together. A proper service for it all and see if it solves.

A creak is not normally headset or bars, they tend to click, but can't rule it out.

This weekend they're talking of going down to Chepstow and back up through Gloucestershire & Herefordshire villages for a 100 miler. I've not done one for several years, so I'm really up for it and want to do it - knowing I'll not really struggle legs and fitness wise... But time in the saddle I may - especially as having '2 meal stops' has been mentioned - making me think it'll be an 8 hour slow as hell ride and not a 6 hour like I've done before!

Crossed this off. 116 miles in 9.5 hours(!). My longest on Strava (in 1 activity). Good ride although caught in rain twice lots of fantastic sights and roads. Great group to do it with (my usual saturday social club). 10 riders out for most of it. First rain heading towards Chepstow killed my Stages (not the first time, need to re-try my waterproofing fix). Going over the Severn bridge (old/original) was an experience - I'd never realised how much the thing moved! Some fantastic lanes around there back up towards Gloucester. Really quiet, winding and smooth. Lunch in 'Slimbridge' right next to the Sharpness Canal which we half followed back riding along the towpath in 2 sections - the first quite rough (amazing gravel bike territory). The second a great route into & through Gloucester Docks following it but quite a maze to avoid the main roads to head back north out of the City afterwards. Ended up on the top of the old 'Over' road bridge (largest single span bridge in Europe) following NCN41 to then cut across the A40 (which was crappy, it needs some kinda link - the cycle path on maps doesn't exist). Following our noses heading north past Newent I started to struggle, hand full of jellybabies and a gel got me back. Really needed the second food stop they'd talked about, but didn't even see a shop in the last 30 miles. Soldiered on, coming back over Markle Ridge & Haugh woods was a slog at that point, but knowing they where done put in a long pull on the flats towards town. Rain started again so called for a lift the last couple of solo miles to get home sooner & get some food down me.

7.5 hours moving time was probably pretty good for some of the route as it was slow roads/paths and we rode steady/easy for quite a few sections the latter half as kept losing 1-2 riders (including me a couple of times after Newent). Not sure the extra 2 hours stopped I can really account for - food stop was delayed slightly (café couldn't handle 10 hungry cyclists!) but didn't feel like we stopped that long otherwise. Legs did not like me on sunday but thankfully didn't do much. Very happy to sit and play Lego/HotWheels/Dinosaurs with my son most of the day! Still quite stiff today, but everything else generally good considering the time in the chair. Tender in a few places but avoided anything too painful or focused in any particular area... Toes, shoulders, lower back, sit bones etc.

The route taken was just over 50 miles and a really good mix flats and some bloody steep hills. I've never ridden in a group before so that took some getting used to. I really enjoyed being pushed as there is no slacking off when in a group. All in that day I did 62 miles, which for many on here isn't much, but it was double my previous longest ride so I was well impressed with myself. My legs were bloody killing the next day or 2 though.
Great news with your fit and getting into the club side of things. It can be a daunting thing to do - but you'll meet some fantastic people doing it! Welcome! :D

Check seat post/saddle. I had this once and figured it out by noticing that the creak stopped when I was climbing out of the saddle.

I've not ventured that far on my learning of the bicycle maintenance... so might ask the shop next time it's in. Mind you, I feel like I asked them last time and it's still there.

(Can't quote as I think you broke your post  )
Fairly sure it makes noise when out of saddle too.

Having said all this, it has been a lot better the last couple of rides...

My bike was making a bit of a weird noise. Realised it was the seat that wasn’t tightened quite enough and was “cracking” when I put a lot of force through it.

Last creak I posted about on here was the rear ratchet system of a DT Swiss wheel that had a recall.

Worth checking your cranks isn't doing the whole hashtag thankshimano as that presents as a creak.

This is the point the guy who has been on the front gets angry that I don't give him a spell. Pricks. One of the fastest time trial guys in Scotland and this other guy with a 55 tooth chainring on. Nope. GTF.

What was the DT Recall?

If you’re not racing and someone isn’t pulling it’s likely that they can’t! If you are racing then it’s racing and MTFU haha.

Took the winter bike again on Sunday, light rain which disappeared after 45 minutes. Killer as we stayed local and did all the local climbs, no pop in my legs, but someone did think my bike was super quiet so taking the compliment.

Summer bike needs a new front gear cable, shifting has deteriorated quickly and tonight wouldn’t go from small to big so I something is wrong. I have the cables just Sram are a big awkward to setup.

Well I could have pulled then blown up....self preservation. Got to keep something in the tank and I like to get it back down to 180bpm for when an attack comes.

There is no nice and humble riding these days, nobody takes big steady pulls to help the bunch stay together. It's all go as hard as you can go until it snaps, ease up, do it again. Then they flick the elbow and people are in bits. As I said GTF.

I was being a bit cheeky about how so many of them have big balls out at the chainy but can't step up and race the National road race as they would get their balls booted in an actual race, had to get the brakes on going round a massive roundabout as the TT boy can't corner worth a ****.

Your winter bike will get you fitter and make the good bike feel even better once you get back on it. I don't find Sram to be that bad to set up following the instuctions, 99% of the time it gets where it has to be. Shimano on the other hand can be a very bike dependent in my experience.

Yeah but you can’t help but be competitive… i was pretty close with another bloke racing up the climbs, but he always had just enough to drop me just before the tops :o I’m sure it’s about 3kg heavier and not aero at all!

Went out with my mate who is generally much fitter, younger (and some would say better looking) the other day and finally managed to keep up/lead the pace a bit. A combination of me cycling a bit more and him cycling a bit less has evened the playing field somewhat. My bike also costs about 10x what his did and the fool only had an 11-28 on the rear but I'm taking the victory.

Guess who hasn’t set up a FD in a while…. Got the cable through the frame which is usually a nightmare.

Then spent ages stuffing with it, always having one bit of the cage rub. Got to the stage of almost launching everything, went inside ate a banana and came back to it. Started again check height & alignment and it seemed 95% of the way there almost straight away. I’ve got it to where I’d expect within 2 minutes this time & now just need a test ride.

I struggle a little I think getting the cable tension correct without an in-line adjuster. Even if the alignment is right have to stuff about with it to get tension correct.

So I had a run in on the bike which ruined one of the tyres with a slash in it, so I have brought new tyres conti gp 5000 str and gone tubeless as the dt Swiss rims were tubeless ready and I’ve always wanted to try but never got around to it.

So far it’s working great but it seams with the digital pressure gauge it seems to lose about 2-3 psi when not using the bike.
I did submerge the wheels/rim in water about 1/2 inch up the spokes and couldn’t see any obvious bubbles as I rotated the wheel road is this normal for a new setup?

I don't have that specific tyre but I certainly find that I lost a bit of pressure if I don't ride for a few days to a week. I've just got into the habit of checking it every time I go out.

Well last night was expensive. I've been after a comfier saddle than what came on my new bike and was browsing Ebay and bought a few

Fizik Tempo Argo R3 which seems to be a pretty comfortable saddle which is probably more suitable, and then a Selle San Marco Aspide Superleggera. This one looks like it's a super high end saddle and very minimal so might not suit me overly well, but with it being Ebay i figure i'm unlikely to lose too much buying and reselling in the hunt for something i like.

I used to have that San Marco saddle. I liked the wave shape, but it is narrow and the cut out wasn’t quite wide enough for me, I ended up squashing the foam either side of it.

I moved to a Prologo Dimension after some years which is a bit wider saddle and wider cut out.

Anyone with a Varia radar put the approaching speed of vehicles on their display? Do you find it works well? I'm still not 100% comfortable with cars approaching fast (or what happens in a lot of cases, sounds fast due to the greater air displacement of SUVs) from behind when out on solo rides and am thinking a Varia might help by enabling greater awareness of what is actually happening.

I didn't actually realise that was option? Also, surely it can only do the speed difference of them coming at you, rather than their speed?
