Looks like the fun times could be over for some cyclists, speed limits, which means number plates, which I reckon will lead to insurance...

I don't see this happening at all, where would the number plates even go.

As for speed limits its pretty hard for your average cyclist to exceed them, even 20mph, the exception being road bikes by relatively fit people who can maintain a speed above 20mph on flat ground or a decline.

Insurance is an unnecessary tax on cyclists, the vast majorty are responsible and safe, kids would be exempt from requiring insurance and likely to cause more problems with irresponsible behavior. Then there are those who don't care about the rules or law and would ignore it anyway.

I have commuted to work by bike for the past 11+ years, doing 14 miles a day, number of incidents = 0. Just like I drive ~60,000 miles a year for work, number of incidents = 0.
 
Look at the policing for scooters. The non existent.. Never gonna happen.

And its opposite of what you want driving people away from cycling?

Well yeah, but you still have to have a number plate and insurance / rfl for your car. I've been driving for 40 years, never had a car accident either...

Absolutely as I said before doing ~1200 miles a week, I see dozens of people everyday on their phones behind the wheel. I once drove alongside some guy in his merc on his phone for nearly 2 miles on a motorway, with his kids in the back. Makes my blood boil, I submitted the 360 degree video from my work vehicle to the police who did actually prosecute him.

I believe the issue is that once we are all limited to 20mph, having a cyclist in lycra whizzing past you with no consequences would be rather ridiculous...

You are right but there is more stupid kids with electric bikes (scooters) capable of breaking speed limits?

Granted I'm a bit of a porker, but on a road bike, I would only be getting near 20MPH going absolutely hell for leather with a a tailwind. I'm not sure it's as easy as some make out.

I’m not sure how one measures speed on a pedal cycle mind so I have no idea how this can be practically implemented. Let’s be realistic, they are not going to be able to force cycle computers on everyone, far too many bikes already on the roads.

The rest is just culture war nonsense to please their audience. At no point did he was it was happening, it was posed as a question.

And no, the vast majority of cyclists will not break the speed limit even at 20mph because they are simply not fit enough.
