Number plates for cyclists...

You are right but there is more stupid kids with electric bikes (scooters) capable of breaking speed limits?

If an electric bike is exceeding the speed limit under electrical powerr only, its an illegal one, escooters are illegal anyway, and if they are exceeding 15.5mph even more so. As has been said though the police are doing nothing about them, I see them everyday on my commutes no one seems to care.

Even when you get gangs of kids in hoodies barrelling through town stealing phones/handbags etc the police do nothing. Unless of course someone intervenes and knocks them off the scooter or restrains them, then that person is arrested, while the kid walks scott free.

Very good point m8 I do lot's of driving delivering goods for my clients and police? What police!!!

Maybe it's more about money, if you had a number plate I'm sure it would have to be registered for a fee, not to mention if they went down the insurance / tax route...
Cyclists I think are the one group of road users that's (directly) not been fleeced yet...

As both a cyclist and driver, in principle I'm all for registrations for cyclists - I certainly would have no hesitation displaying one if required to do so, but there are practical considerations (e.g. do kids bikes need a registration?, where are you going to display a plate which is big enough to be easily visible, but not get in the way/cause significant wind resistance?)

Insurance is a bit more of a grey area - in a car obviously you can easily cause tens of thousands worth of damage, not so much with a bike (although certainly possible if you crash into someone's Ferrari). I guess you take the risk of being sued!

Exactly - prices have massively jumped in the last 10 years. A basic carbon road/MTB bike is now £3-4k. Top end off the shelf bikes are £10k-£12k !!
Maybe that's is why number plate (they are thinking) if people baying bike's for this sort of money they can afford insurance and road tax.

Ah, so if they can afford that they can afford the number plate / rfl / insurance then. Signed, G. Shapps esq.

A quick google suggests 20 million cycles in the UK. Those number plates are going to have to be loooooooooong.

Granted I'm a bit of a porker, but on a road bike, I would only be getting near 20MPH going absolutely hell for leather with a a tailwind. I'm not sure it's as easy as some make out.

No it really is! I can comfortably maintain 18mph on a mountain bike with all-mountain gearing and big fat tyres. 20mph on a commuter or road bike is comfortable.

Commuting to the city and walking from Liverpool Street station to Tower Hill I see countless cyclists jumping red lights with the worst offenders not stopping when pedestrians are crossing. Not sure how they can be prosecuted though.
