It's still the age old adage - If you can See it then you can Hit it and if you can Hit it then you can Kill it - but I agree that, with the "seeing" part of the kill chain being massively shortened, due to the use of drones to keep an all-seeing eye permanently over a relatively static battlespace, we've definitely entered an age where Sensor to Shooter to Effect has never been shorter and that effectiveness has become a large surprise to Russia, almost like they learned nothing in their years in Syria where this was a common tactic.

It'll be interesting to see in the very near future how more "technical" militaries (mostly Western) adapt in the future when a few $100 hobby drones can remove virtually all aspects of both strategic and tactical surprise. My guess is more EM-type weapons will be developed but I wonder whether "KISS" might be a better strategy rather than the usual response of demanding a more "technical" answer to a problem.

Shareholders won't like that!

This is what really blows my mind with Russia... They have had decades of their own conflicts to learn from. |Not only that, they also have had decades of watching other conflicts and other nations make mistakes. Yet they have learned nothing, or have just chosen to blatantly ignore these lessons.
Instead they have just plowed on with old doctrine like its the only answer. From our perspective it just seems bizarre! We are still only ~6 months in, Russian tactics may very well work in the long run, but so far has just seemed stupid and wasteful.

It's the drones usage that really stands out for me, from surveillance to attack.

This is the beginning of a huge change in how warfare is conducted.
All forms of camouflage have basically been rendered useless thanks to drones, there's nowhere you can hide unless you're underground, also no chance of hiding any military build up anywhere because there's cameras and social media everywhere spotting it all

Something like Operation Overlord or Market Garden done today would have zero chance of success

IAEA officials asks Russians why a rocket in the ground at the nuclear power plant is pointed in the direction that indicates it was fired from the Russian side. Russian official helpfully explains that it's because the NATO rockets supplied to Ukraine do a u-turn before they hit the ground as a provocation to make it look like they came from the Russian side.

As their cost decrease and availability increases, this is likely to be a very bad thing. I can't see this genie going back into the bottle.

With the way the US/West conduct operations, gaining air superiority and keeping aerial assets loitering to be called in for close air support for troops in contact, imagine integrating that real time intelligence into that action chain. They will be able to coordiinate air/ground/naval assets in extremely low time frames and very accurately striking the target.

Potentially leaves you quite exposed to potentially even the temporary loss of a single satellite or disruption of drones.

I'm always surprised how long it is taking ramping up effective anti-drone tech.

True, but then you still have the basic tactics of scouting, recon and co-ordination. Which comes down to training and communication, which is also what the West holds in high priority.

I see the low-cost, indiscriminate, use of drones being like cheap sweets for the adventurous despot.

Once drones are cheap enough, they can be used for mass attacks.

The next step is marine drones: the new mines.

It's potentially rather bad news for the Eurasian/ African landmass..

Just another advance, counter drone technology at least for the nerd level bedroom boy kit will out their in 6-12 months, much more than it is now.

I didn't realise how vulnerable Russia oil ships currently are; they're spending long amounts of time in the Atlantic Ocean doing transfers from ship to another - imagine that, a billion dollar ships just standing still in the middle of the ocean for days, just ripe for pirates to come take it.

Or the bucaneering UK post Brexit!?
