Hasn't Russia already been firing a lot of dud ammo and that's the ones that actually fired/launched.

You'd think that after such an exposure of incompetence and corruption someone would be getting out an axe to clean house.

All this time NATO was burning money and training to be better than the bogeyman of Russia which was in fact sabotaging itself.

Would the explosives still work after all that time? I thought these things had expiry/best before dates (or whatever the military equivalent is)?

Loads of videos on YouTube of people firing much older ammo, with mixed results - but generally a large percentage of it works more or less as it should and a percentage will be duds or unstable, etc.

As mentioned things get a bit more complicated when you come to missiles - which generally have a shelf-life of more like 20 years tops, half that if they involve batteries.

Thanks for the text *seven :)

I don't really know why Russia is so annoyed at Ukraine, specifically, for wanting to join NATO.

They are surrounded on the west by nations either in NATO or joining it, they've called out Finland/Sweden etc, but ultimately the actions they themselves are taking are providing the best argument for countries like Ukraine to join it.

I can imagine those "other regions" will tell Russia what the price will be though lol.

They would but there is likely to be many more duds. People still buy WW2 era ammo and earlier for some historic firearms on the surplus market.
And if it was good quality ammo, correctly sealed and correctly stored (dry, stable moderate temperature) it should be as good today as it was when it was made.

The Warsaw Pact era ammo stored in big soldered metal cans should be good for decades to come.

I think the use of NATO as the ever present bogeyman is used to drive nationalism and keep Putin in power.

Exactly.

Finland: We don’t need to be in NATO.

Russia: Let’s invade Ukraine.

Finland: Hello, is that the NATO Membership Dept? Oh good, my name’s Finland and I’d like to join…

Something the "free thinkers" fail to mention is that Ukraine only ever moved closer to NATO in sync with, and as a reaction to, Russian acts of aggression and for a large part of their post Soviet history, despite overtures from the West in regard to NATO membership, shunned joining military alliances preferring only cooperation - partly due to having pro-Russian leaders at certain points and partly to try and avoid confrontation with Russia...

I'm not sure there has ever been a case in history where trying to appease a tyrant (or similar) has ever worked out anything but a very bad thing in the longer run.

exclusive Reuters report, reveals that that the negotiation envoy obtained an agreement from Ukraine that it would agree to never join nato and scale down its military. The envoy went to Putin and recommended doing the deal - Putin rejected, countered the deal saying he wants all of what the Ukranians offered, and he wants some land he can annex. Ukrainians rejected the annexation and the deal was thrown out window.

I don't think they're so much annoyed about NATO as annoyed about Ukraine adopting a west-facing position.

Russia is an absolute droppings-show of a country when it could, and arguable should, have become a decently prosperous, successful, Eastern European nation such as Poland or Czechia but with all the extra benefits their enormous reserves of natural resources could bring. Instead, under Yeltsin and then Putin the country turned into a kleptocratic state with a chosen few (e.g. Abramovich, etc.) allowed to plunder billions from the Russian people, and a once great country still has a quarter of its population without indoor toilets.

Ukraine, with a large Russian speaking population and many family ties with Russia, is uniquely placed to put these failures into stark contrast. If Ukraine builds itself into a prosperous democracy on Russia's doorstep then it becomes very hard for people in Russia to ignore.

In hindsight - a very good deal!

I find modern military uniform a curious thing now.
Its basically so similar across most modern militaries that at anything other than a few metres its going to be basically indistinguishable between nations and as such they resort to things like blue and yellow tape all over the place to try to avoid friendly fire in a heat of the moment situation.

Yep should definitely go full red vs blue.

Crye Multicam proved so successful that everyone and his dog ditched their digital patterns to introduce Multicam knock-offs in colours suitable to their terrain and vegitation.

The personal versions of Blue Force Tracker technology need to arrive sooner rather than later.
