Dictionary definition of delusion look no further than this!

So pretty clear he's on the backfoot and planning to "annex" currently occupied territories ASAP and throwing nuclear option on the table under pretence of defending Russia so its use falls under the current military doctrine.

This isn't true, the alien protectorate that monitors us would come down to stop the war and finally reveal themselves to the world allowing us to join the alliance and become a Star Trek utopia

Looks like they're going to zerg

Crossing the scifi streams here but Ukraine are stocking up on UA 571-C Automated Sentry Guns

This is literally what its going to end up like if Russia hasn't got a load of decent equipment and training lined up.

a lot of what has underpinned this war seems to be Putin finally losing patience with what he sees as the world not taking him seriously

His actions have been taken seriously the entire time.

The words of Russia on the other hand, they're so loaded with lies the only rational answer is to watch what the actions are and base your response on that.

I'm not sure how this would work, Would they just drop nuclear tactical bombs in their own people currently holding onto what they have in territory?..Would they have to move them out then bomb?

He is struggling with the power and his war. Some of the hardliners have been asking of mobilisation for months. What happened is that they are running out of meat.
They claimed to have less than 6000 dead, but need 300k. Are their maths not that great...

Well, they have circa 150k casualties, but like I said there is a secondary issue here of the potential security vacuum in Russia, if/when they suffer further defeats in Ukraine he could face issues internally.

They're already openly paranoid about it but they're blaming the West, claiming it's NATO etc.. seeking to break up Russia when some Republics might be quite keen to take advantage of a moment of weakness to do it anyway.

So he needs troops both to relieve frontline units in Ukraine and to at least attempt to hold their current territorial gains/have some leverage during peace talks but also for domestic use and mobilisation, with the reasoning that the defence department requested it gives him the excuse.

The way I'm thinking is to just appease Putin right now, allow him to hold these referendums and then say "peace".

Spend billions developing anti ICBM capabilities and turn eastern NATO into the biggest defensive structure ever seen.

Wait for Putin to have another pop in 5-6 years time. That'll give him time to keep his head down and regroup before he kicks off again.

When the time does come, call his bluff on the nuke front. Intercept all incoming whilst replying with absolutely massive conventional strikes on infrastructure, manufacturing and military targets.

I can't see any other way other than either surrendering all of the ex Soviet bloc now or the stare down nuclear way.

Appeasing Putin will result in China invading Taiwan.
