Bit of a tenuous link, but we got back from Antalya this morning where we spent a fair amount of time on the Med. The presence of these coast guard vessels was very noticeable, there were at least 5 of them and one of them at one point was definitely looking for something going by its wake in the distance and the speed it was travelling:

Definitely keeping an eye on things.

Could be immigrants on RIBS, which is probably a bigger threat to national security globally given the impotence of the RU military.

Could well be, I have no idea. I just thought it was quite surreal that we were chilling in the water whilst these vessels were quite clearly keeping an eye on national security issues. First time I've seen something that made me realise quite how serious this could be.

the fact they are threatening since the first week of this twisted war to use nukes is outrageous, they must get the message that the whole western hemisphere will retaliate with

they probably spotted an octopus and they are after it...

Yeah if a nuke gets used by russia can't see how it won't get out of hand.

I mean, how can't it get out of hand? Can't let Russia get away with it. But what can you do without starting a full on nuclear war?

My personal fear through all this is putin feeling he's losing.. Lashing out, and all hell breaking loose. Cornered animal

Well, that's kinda their job. I'm not sure what you spotting some little patrol boat in the Med on your holiday in Turkey has to do with Ukraine, they've got some tensions with Greece and issues with migrants at the moment but they'll have been patroling waters there for many years. If you were in Gibraltar you might see some Spanish Guardia civil boats.

For everyone that thinks nuclear war isn't going to happen.

Why do you think it won't happen?

Depends what you mean, a big nuclear war between NATO and Russia is rather unlikely at the moment and neither side wants that but there is a risk that Russia might use tactical nuclear weapons and that will almost certainly generate a conventional NATO response.

There are all sorts of ways that could go afterwards, no-fly zone, conventional attacks by NATO on Russian facilities in Ukraine inc Crimea etc. on one hand NATO would almost certainly need to respond to it both as it's an obvious red line and also it would likely affect some NATO members with the fall out thus triggering article 5 but on the other hand it's certainly going to heighten the risk. A response would be necessary IMO but that can also escalate to the point where things go out of control quite quickly.

It's unlikely but it's serious enough to be concerned about which is why the West has held back a bit on arms deliveries, is wary of things that could be seen as an escalation etc. Even if there are tactical nukes used in Ukraine and a conventional response occurs from NATO it isn't necessarily likely that that need escalate further into an exchange of nuclear weapons.

The one thing that must be off the table is giving into threats. I don’t think the west needs to do much more than stay united and carry on with plan A. We don’t need to escalate, even if he threatens to do so.

No dude, I've been on enough beaches to know when something's a bit off. The "little patrol boats" you're referring to are these:

Trust me, seeing 5 of them on the water fairly close to you is a bit of an eye opener.

What are you proposing / thinking it was ?

No idea, someone above suggested it could be a patrol for illegal dinghys. Could also be just keeping an eye out for anything else obvs, but the point I was making was that it was a considerably higher presence than what I would've expected to see.

Maybe the Russian subs based in Syria are on the move, otherwise they're probably just doing Coast Guardy stuff

Surely in that case, the "issue" could well be with your expectations, not the level of presence they are actually displaying right now?
