Only issue with a nuke is you only have to be roughly close but it would be an attack on a NATO ally.. not something that BRICS will want (India and china have indicated they want a de-escalation).

The planet won’t support anywhere near the number of survivors.

That's not true. Granted the UK wil be screwed but South America will be largely unaffected for starters. Malaysia and SE Asia won't be the target of many nukes. India and China - if they get involved - will benefit from losing hundreds of millions and have no food problems.

The inconvenient truth is that nukes aren't actually that powerful and that the Earth's habitable land masses are absolutely huge. South America and most of Africa will likely escape completely. India and China - if they got involved - would actually benefit from massive population loss. Sure nukes are good at taking out towns (or military formations) but most towns are quite far apart. The buildings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki were largely wooden so burned easily. It's very telling that the stone and brick buildings largely survived. And there aren't any Tsar Bombas any more.

One reason the nuclear powers are dreading the first nuclear war is that it will show nukes - particularly tactical nukes - for what they are.

Tactical nukes other than shock factor will also not have much battlefield success for Russia. Tactical nukes obviously have limited yields and so they work best when launched against a heavy concentration of enemy forces. But the Ukrainians are not concentrating their forces in that manner, they have been operating decentralised in small units and so these types of nukes would have no value that traditional bombs don't already have

The big old atom bombs of the height of the cold war if used mostly against built up areas (in reality they'd prioritise military and infrastructure which is often in less built up areas) would have a significant global impact with potential for the more extreme nuclear winter scenarios.

Modern day nuclear weapons which are mostly in the kiloton range and mostly would be used in airburst configuration are a different story.

That's not true Gorbechov (how ever you spell it) started reforms and the ex KGB goons that he failed to to rout out ended up at the key holders again. With the aid of the old fart generals of the time.

That and he realised Chernobyl broke them and they needed the west to fix it.
Half of the Russian elite / politicos want Gorbechov dead, they thought he was a traitor.

Without derailing the thread too much, it’s widely agreed that the effects of the nuclear exchange would be felt far beyond their direct blast radius or even fallout zones.

There lots of other factors too. The idea that directly unaffected areas could carry as they were or even benefit isn’t at all credible. The modern would would cease to exist overnight.

Yes I feel sorry for these guys too. They aren't signing up to fight for money. They have been conscripted, most likely against their will, without proper training and probably without decent weapons, to fight a very motivated, battle hardened and better supplied army.
