Because of MAD, I mean that risk is there (thus we've not intervened directly) but it's quite plausible that it doesn't cause WW3 and the use of tactical nukes would be a bridge too far - carry their own risk, the fallout could reach NATO countries triggering article 5.
You are back to basic MAD principles, which is pretty much the only thing that stops people from playing with nuclear weapons. Here the plan is simple, the west tells Russia that any use of nuclear weapons in Ukraine will be met with an overwhelming conventional response (Putin can’t afford the embarrassment of that kicking) and if you escalate any further as always we all die. Nuclear weapons are great peace keepers provided nobody is stupid enough to press the red button.
Hard not to have a heart for the Russians when you read intercepted calls sometimes. Soldier calling his wife to quite literally just say goodbye after being encircled. Of course, it could just be a propaganda piece, but still.
EDIT: Looks like UKR is smashing RF in Kherson eastern side. They look like they are yet again attempting ANOTHER Encirclement. This is just wild. Basically blitzkrieg.

Although more likely to be maintenance related there seems to be some intelligence assessment that Putin might be mad enough to try and strike logistic staging areas in Poland with cruise missiles launched from these kind of aircraft.
It would be brave to send a strike into a NATO territory.
Not sure brave is the word I'd use there.
As it is being talked about directly or indirectly by those tied into official updates like Marco Rubio I'm assuming there is some specific intelligence linked to it - possibly desperation in response to the additional HIMARS en route given the impact a relatively small number of them has had.
Being ready for the possibility is wise. If it does happen it would be a very significant escalation and could drag NATO directly into the conflict.
Putins army could be eradicated from the air in Ukraine quite easily. His naval fleet could be sunk in about 20 minutes.
I have been quite amused at the sheer hypocrisy recently at people mocking the plight of Russians trying to flee......and western nations closing their borders off......
And yet it was deemed most racist and unfair if anyone suggested maybe the same should be done elsewhere.
In my opinion the end result is the same, Europe is being increasingly destabilised (America is very happy with this!) and long term it will provoke conflict and balkanisation. There is a huge arrogance from lots of people about how great Western culture is. They don't understand quite a lot of people have no respect for what is weak, and a larger proportion who see the "west" currently and think it's pretty grim. Demographics will win in the end...as always. But for now its great for those in power.

If the trigger for Russia to use it's full nuclear force is imminent invasion of Russia or an assault on Russia that it is losing, you would need to avoid that.
NATO would probably need to conduct an air and sea only operation and be very careful to show that no ground operation was being planned for. It would also need to avoid attacking nuclear launch systems as the loss of these might push Russia to use the before losing them.
NATO could probably really break the infrastructure of Russia, destroy command and control centres, take down bridges, hit ammo dumps, remove air defences.
It would be very dangerous though and would be very easy to get out of hand - but if they have already nuked Ukrainer to get us to this point, well things are already out of hand.

Why on Earth would you interpret me being pro Russian? I'm depressed by war...again and I harbour a viewpoint that there there is a distinct tail risk of serious escalation. I have a very nice lifestyle thank you and certainly don't want a bunch of idiots ruining it.
I'm pointing out the hypocrisy in that we are quite happy to say no to some people, yet it's impossible to have a conversation about other people without being shut down....hence the inevitable conclusion about where it will lead.
But I do like the hysterical responses; the frantic wailing at even a misinterpretation of anything that could even has been misconstrued as being less than pro Ukrainian is quite amusing.
Not America - USA, anyway; Venezuela's another matter - but China.
