An extension build

Morning!

Here's a few photos of where we are right now. We're still not there yet, but we're in a livable environment now, though I still spend any spare time decorating.

- We have some LED strip lighting that's now accenting the steel, and works on the same switch as the under cupboard and plinth lighting. It lights the room up in a nice balanced way, but we still have the option of using the downlights for focus lighting when we need it.
- The extractor has been fitted and boxed in, but still needs painting.
- We've had some oak veneer doors hung which are lovely but required a few evenings of oiling the minute they were fitted. We're pleased with the result though.
- The induction hob, sink, worktops, flooring, all fitted, which has given us an environment that we can actually clean. Seemed pointless before, because the dust on the floor just kept flying up and landing on everything. It's still happening now, but it's happening less and less as we wash more and more of it away. The induction hob took a bit of practice to use, but I am now making weekend pancakes with the same excellent results as when I used a gas hob :D
- Having the sinks back was a revelation. So pleased to wash up and put away in the same area. I'll never look at a sink the same way again now.
- We've started moving furniture back in, including that IKEA box thing in the corner. Going to put the telly on that, rather than wall mounting it for the time being, because I'm too concerned about wall anchors, and the distance that the TV is going to have to come away from the wall to reach around the steel.
- The bi-fold trims and vents have been fitted, and we've now got skirting and architrave which has tidied the room up no end, and created no end of gloss painting. So much paint. Unreal.

- My wife's painted the wall a teale shade which I immediately noticed and labelled "Makita Green" - It's the exact same shade as all the tools that've been on site for the last four months. That's the power of subliminal messaging for you. A sofa will go up against the length of that wall, as well as a rug. We've since got rid of a lot of the building stuff that's been piled up in that area.
- You can see some LED accenting around the ceiling extractor. Still got to paint all that white, not got round to it yet.
- Please excuse the mess on the worktops at this point - I was clearing up and wanted to get a few photos of the lighting for you!
- This photo shows the light provided solely by the LED strips around the steels and extractor. I didn't put any of the focus lighting on. It's nice ambient light, but I'd want brighter options available, so glad we kept the downlights. We do still use them.

Very nice.
Im not one for open steelwork generally (and OMG those bolts your going to die111!!1) but that actually looks awesome as a focal point.

Covering the bifolds? If not get some low level lighting in the garden, it seems to draw the room out again when you can see past them :)

I've noticed your 'smoke alarm', it looks like the one the contractors installed in our kitchen. I bet you that's ripped off it's connectors in a few months. Damn thing is a heat sensor, and goes off every single time I open the oven.

That's interesting it look identical to the one we've got which is just above our oven and never gone off once, perhaps yours (or mine?!) is faulty.

That one rogue door on the wall units with the handle on the opposite side of the door to the rest of the pairs would not sit well with my OCD.

Everything else looks great mate, you must be chuffed!

We have the same and have no issues. Would be an interesting conversation with the insurance company if the worst happened, given it forms part of building regs.

Valid point, forgot to include this:

We have created a retaining wall for a patio area which will also have a step down on to the grass. We're still trying to push this through but the builders haven't been able to come back and complete it yet. Once that's done we'll renew the fencing and sort the garden out.

Hue outdoor lights are either side of the bi-folds, so we can control the shading / brightness of an evening when we're outside.

Quick demo from a few weeks back:

Hasn't gone off yet! It's radio linked with 2 other detectors, and hasn't given us any problems in the couple of months or so that they've been fitted. Fingers crossed!

Yeah, the door can only open that way, because the cupboard door goes across the pillar. There was no room on the other side of the door for the hinge, so it sits that way instead. It doesn't bother me :)

The lighting under the steels was a good idea! Looks nice. Is it wireless or wired? I'm considering some wireless/battery ones under my kitchen units but not sure how long they will last..

Got a link if they're battery and you reckon they last a while? Are they on proximity sensors?

It's all mains-wired by an electrician, and he's hidden the cabling really well because the lighting was all planned before the room was plasterboarded. I actually used the idea earlier in the thread from @-Ad- who lambasted me for having any downlights and also gave me some good ideas in the process! :D

There's also power for lighting already set up for the patio area. When that's built up, we'll have some uplighters built in that'll shine light around it and illuminate the step / border area.

Ah cool, I need to get some battery ones under my counters I think!

Nice one Karl looks lovely, I bet your well chuffed. Got my extension starting next week very excited.

Cheers mate, and good luck!

Just before you start, check your insurance documents, and see if there is anything on your buildings insurance about notifying your insurer about renovation works. If there is, give them a ring and let them know what is happening.

Can't believe I somehow missed your September update. But it looks awesome and you've made the beams work for you by creating light from them - smart idea!

The only thing that niggles me, is being able to see the lines of mortar through the rendering. It's niggling enough in the daylight photo, but you can also see it in your night photo too.

Looks amazing and good inspiration. The exposed beams with the lighting is a lovely feature.

OCD negatives for anyone attempting a build
- that kitchen wall cabinet with the handle at odds with the others.
- external armoured cable going up the wall to the outdoor socket (I spurred off an internal socket the other side if the wall for mine, then drilled out, so hidden cables).

That is literally it, I have some minor regrets after doing ours, mainly as the last minute aspect and cost meant keeping the electrics to a bare minimum, so now regret not getting armoured cable fed down each side of the garden for lighting etc… and I said no to external wall lights, and just got a single feed terminating under the soffit so I can add an LED strip outside and was going to stick that on the soffit, but now looking at everyone else’s efforts, I should have had two feeds for external wall lights.

Yeah we have yet to paint the render, but that’ll cover all that up :)

lol that handle - it doesn’t bother me at all :D

That armoured cable goes up to two external sockets which I asked for so I could plug in bits and pieces for BBQs etc, so not just a cable extension. It will go straight into the patio anyway :)
