An extension build

Week 10 did not go as planned. In fact:

- We didn't get the downstairs toilet demolished
- Our kitchen was delivered flat pack which we didn't realise we agreed to, which has cost us some time
- Nothing has changed outside.

Here's what we DID get done:

Kitchen got delivered on Tuesday, albeit in many boxes, and assembly took place. We also had a few more surfaces plastered, and over the weekend we painted roughly half of the ceiling and walls white.
We're planning to paint more this weekend if we get time, as the steel and remaining plastered areas need sorting out before the aircon unit gets fitted, ideally.

Some kitchen!

The fridge comes on Monday, and we're looking to get a dishwasher plumbed in early next week, which I personally CANNOT WAIT for, as I am sick of washing up in the bathroom!!!

Still a few more surfaces that need to be skimmed, including the boys' bedroom, so we'll need to get that redecorated next weekend as well.

It's FINALLY starting to come together a bit! :D

Looks good! A shame the kitchen came flat pack, that must have taken a while to sort! Possibly useful for some areas eg around the steel though.

Probably added a day and a half tbh, as usually the cabinets would've just gone straight in apparently. It is what it is now anyway, and it's nice to see some progress, as the last 2 weeks have been pretty slow going.

I have NO idea where we're going to put the telly. The original idea was to the left of the steel post you can see in this photo, underneath the big cable where the air con is going:

.... But I'm not sure that (even with a mount that extends out about 28") it will be visible around the post when turned toward that plastered wall where the utility room is. The plan is to have a sofa along that wall, and it means I can watch telly while I do a bit of cooking

Why don't you nail it randomly in the corner and drape wires everywhere? (Can't remember who that was but no offense if it was someone in this thread ).

Week 11 was a short week, but a fair bit of polish has been added, and we're definitely getting somewhere now.

The boys' bedroom wall where the chimney breast used to be has now been replastered, and we're nearly ready to redecorate and get their furniture back. They've been quite unsettled with all the work that's been going on, and having their bedroom in disarray has not helped at all.

We have a working dishwasher, a working microwave, and 2 working ovens. This is FANTASTIC news for me, because I'm sick of washing up in the bathroom. There are some more doors to put on, trim to be added, LEDs, etc, but it's great to see it at this point now after so long.

We also have lighting in place (though it doesn't work), a fridge ready to go in, and live sockets.

The doors and windows are in, and we can see the garden again (which admittedly is a state!). Lovely to see the outside again, after so many months of staring at 6mm ply.

Air con unit is in, but the outdoor unit has yet to be wired up. Quite a lot of painting has happened since the last pictures went up, but still more to do, as you can see some freshly plastered surfaces.

We've brought the toilet door forwards to create some more cloakroom space which would've otherwise been dead now that the old kitchen door has been closed up. There'll be some cupboards to the side there, and we'll continue the floor tiling up to the door liner.

Not much has changed outside, except the bi-folds. A load of sand, cement and blocks have arrived to begin work on the retaining wall for the patio outside which will probably happen in a couple of weeks' time now.

Week 12 will also be a short one for the builders due to the bank holiday, but we'll be spending this weekend and the bank holiday doing a lot of painting, and I'll be setting my sights on getting those steels cleaned up and painted.

From their perspective, they'll have to get the ceiling extractor in to place, LED lighting, cupboard doors, the small window in to the entrance from the hallway, and they have yet to make a start on rendering the external walls, soak-away, gulley, guttering, turning the boiler around, and fitting the utility cupboards etc.

I think it's going to run in to maybe 15 or 16 weeks all-in, but maybe that's optimistic!

Coming on really nicely, look forward to seeing the end result.

It's a pity though that soo many spotlights have been shotgunned into the ceiling in neat lines/grids. Too close together and not planned, unfortunately typical sparky!?

I also can't see a light over the island?

Are you leaving the beams exposed so that you can keep an eye on those couple of bolts? ;):D

If it was me I would be tying a piece of cotton around the pairs of bolts so I could see if they moved. I would check morning and night.
Hell maybe even lunchtime as well
For belt and braces a permanent laser line levelled on the edge of the beam

;)

We're not bothered at all by the spotlights, most areas dimmable as well. There's a gap in the lighting there because we've still yet to mount a small box containing the extractor fan and some LED lighting - No LED strips have gone in yet, so I'll update with some photos so you can see what's gone where :)

Week 12 was short, but quite a bit got done.

We got a plastered-out utility with units fitted

We've painted. A lot. Again. Including the steels:

The doors all got fitted, and most of the appliances (except the extractor and hob) are now usable. Still waiting on sinks, but that will happen after the worktops go in. Having the new fridge in place has created a lot of space too. Just waiting for someone to come and get the old one.

We're using bits of shelving as worktops in the interim. Better than nothing for sure!

Outside we've got everything rendered, and the trench for the retaining wall has had concrete poured, and a few bricks for the first course have been placed. We've also sorted the outdoor plug sockets and the shielded cable that goes out to the garage has been reconnected.

Here's the outdoor unit for the air con.

Week 13 will be even quieter, as the builders are moving largely on to another job. As the kit disappears it's creating more space which is great, but we'll spend most of the evenings this week painting out the rest of the plastering. We're anticipating that the retaining wall gets a few more blocks this week, but that may well be it from a construction perspective.

We've had a date for flooring confirmed as 20th / 21st September (2 days to fit), and hoping the worktops arrive and go in well ahead of that.

There's a LOT left to do before we even think about a snag list, but progress is still being made and we've got some elements of a serviceable kitchen, and have been able to move things out of our temporary lounge kitchen, so we're quite happy :D

I've really enjoyed reading the progress on this, so thanks for sharing it. The space and finish look fantastic, you must be really pleased. The builder(s) have done a great job, so you've done well to find one that gives you a great end product.
Are you going to Pebble dash the external render of leave as it? I personally have a dislike for pebble dash, but might be difficult to tie the old into the new without doing it, particuarly around your side door! The kitchen looks really nice, and the worktops and flooring will make a massive difference.

This is something I'd consider at our next house if it isn't big enough... You've mentioned you have kids... How has this experience been with them? I can't imagine losing applicances/kitchen/sink/etc with kids, I suspect it would be very irritating and hard work!

Keep up the good work and updates.
