Is anyone using a Unifi device as a Mesh? I have a UDR, and the wifi does not reach the upper floor (to be expected I guess). My plan was to buy an AP and put it somewhere between the UDR and upstairs and Mesh them and then hopefully have good wifi upstairs. I have 1GB and I no way need that much or expect to get that upstairs! Even if I got 200Mbps I would be fine with that, at the moment its barely 10Mbps and very flakey upstairs. Rented apartment so not much I can do about the walls or whatever else is causing the signal to degrade!

At a later date I MAY wire the second AP, once I nail down a good position for it, but for now just wanted to get a POE injector and then plug it in in various locations around the flat and find a good spot for better coverage.

Any thoughts or advice?

I am considering the below 3 and I don't wish to spend any more than these cost!:

If you’re not ceiling mounting your access point then get the U6-mesh. It won’t work as well as a ceiling mounted access point but you won’t be crippling a ceiling mount by laying it in a table either.

Thanks, I did notice that there is an optional ceiling mount kit with the Mesh, whereas the other 2 are designed for ceilings.

Are you saying that the ceiling ones do not perform as well if just placed on a table or moved around manually? I was sort of thinking I will just plug it in near a window when I want wifi upstairs, and then unplug it when I don't.

Use the U-mesh, it’s omi directional.

The ceiling mounted ones are directional and not ideal for what you want to do (they project the signal down and out, there is very little behind it).

Edit: if you can get a cable up to the loft (E.g. externally) from the UDR then mounting a u-6 lite on the top floor ceiling would be ideal.

Got around to installing a UAP-AC-PRO in the loft after doing a couple of ethernet runs up there yesterday.

Massively more impressed with the snappiness (for want of a better description) over the Lite ranges I've used in the past.

Is this a thing, or just my perception?

Many thanks.

It's not a loft. I live in a top floor flat and I have a private solarium above me . The router is literally below the solarium, but obviously something in the ceiling/roof is interfering with the signal. I have an outdoor utility area that sort of has line of sight to the solarium so was thinking of putting the second device there as I can get a 300mbps signal to the utility area, so I will assume a meshed device will be able to get 300+ which is fine for me and will be 5ghz. At the moment I'm resorting to 4g when on the solarium, which seems a waste when I have 1gbps internet!

No, they don’t work at all well if left lying in a table.

And they are not designed to be plugged in and out. They’re permanent install devices.

UniFi store shipping is £20 or so. When I got mine it was the same price I think. BBB do move prices I’ve noticed depending on stock availability.
The £40 cheaper included shipping and the actual Mastercard exchange rate :).

Edit: assumed a 0% fee card!

Anyone got any user experience on the unifi 6 pro AP in terms of its wifi speeds?

Currently I have UAP AC Pro - the ISP has provided a Velop router which I am able to get over 500mbps transfer speed on my phone using net speed test. Whilst on my UAP AC Pro my speed is only around 150mbps. My phone doesn’t support wifi 6 but looks like the latest gen chip is just faster on all previous protocol as well.

Thanks

This does not sound like a great idea.

Your entire concept of using a meshed access point to deliver signal in the circumstances you describe do not sound like a recipe for happiness/satisfaction.
