The ongoing Elon Twitter saga: "insert demographic" melts down

You can't fraudulently impersonate someone, if you want to do it for comedy purposes then you just label yourself a parody account. How the **** is that at all unreasonable?

"Escape goat is an "eggcorn," a word or phrase that is a mishearing of another word or expression. Scapegoat is one word and has a specific meaning related to its Biblical origins. Escape goat seems to refer to a farm animal that's good at sneaking out of its pen, not someone who is blamed for the mistakes of others. "

Guys I did it for the lolz. For the sake of comedy. I of course know its not escape goat. It's not exactly rocket surgery to get the phrase right ;)

Twitter is a private company, they can set whatever rules they want.

If you don't like them, nothing is stopping you from building your own social network.

So he admits here they often don't listen to him. So there must be something larger going on than just activists getting involved

So my take from this is that when he contacted the companies they were already looking to pause or had already done so. It just seems so obvious that this would happen.

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on this one then, it seems so obvious that it did have an impact tbh... I suspect some won't necessarily listen to him and others in the long run, the initial hype/fearmongering has scared them off but the reality doesn't seem to be drastic changes in policy or a new Parler/Gab type platform in which case some of the various risk averse ad buyers will trickle back. When you have some risk + BLM and other prominent groups kicking off then no one is getting fired for not buying ads initially because of that risk, no one wants to be a potential target of those groups.

I just read about a mass exodus of Twitter users leaving in favour of a platform called "Mastodon". Although I've never used Twitter myself, I've heard from a few people that Twitter was left wing. So I'm guessing now that Elon Musk is taking over, it's the left that is leaving for Mastodon. I hate it how politicised these web sites have become and I wish that politics could be limited a special section such as a debate section (we have Speaker's Corner), soapbox, have your say, etc. Then we can go about our normal lives in the main section of the site without being antagonised.

Most people will "leave" Twitter for Mastodon expecting it to be like Twitter but without Elon Musk. It is not that. It's a decentralised community of difference servers, some of which you have to apply for to join. It was created by the open-source community as a way of getting away from more regulated social networks.

It will be too much work for most people to understand. They will check it out, get confused, and head back to Twitter.

So it's just like Facebook in that respect is it?
You can join a variety of groups on Facebook which in turn resemble a forum such as this place.

No, you see, you've fallen at the first hurdle, as many will. With Facebook etc, there is ONE website which you go to and join, and then you follow other groups. With Mastdon, there are many, hundreds of different servers. You have to join one instance/server which is disconnected from others, and many of which you have to apply to join. And many of those are currently closed to new registrations.

It's comparable to what happened when Valve announced Proton. It was a way for Windows users who didn't like Windows to game on Linux. Linux saw an unprecedented jump in its userbase and marketshare, which then reduced and stabilised when Windows users realised Linux wasn't for them. I'm sure the same thing will happen with Mastodon, and I'm sure Elon has seen this coming.

Elon couldn't even see himself buying the company he now owns. He's sabotaging the verification system on Twitter for (petty) money and we get to watch him in real time realise the downsides of that while being bullied by 10,000 blue ticked Elon Musk accounts. Why are you giving him credit of foresight and deep thinking.

This makes no sense, how is charging for an online service "sabotaging", why would someone paying for a verified account suddenly be able to falsely impersonate someone? Why did you get it into your head that would be the case?

Falsely impersonating someone is illegal, and the whole parody saga going on currently, is clearly outlined in the ToS of twitter, parody should be stated in the account name/handle and bio.

So everyone malding over Ethan Klien being suspended for doing the above, well he deserved it, also the guys a moron anyway so no real loss.

Musk is getting mocked on his own timeline after scrambling to change the rules on impersonation via Twitter Blue.
