*** AMD "Zen 4" thread (inc AM5/APU discussion) ***

It was my understanding that any cooler is compatible with AM5 providing it did not supply its own back plate for the AM4. The reason being you cannot remove the am5 one.
Therefore anything that did have its own back plate will need a new adaptor for AM5.

Its a rev 4. Took the mounts off the MB to test it and the holes dont match. Must need a new bracket, will use the stock cooler until they are available.
 
Strange, I was under the impression all af2 will fit am5 as they never had a backplate for the am4, they used the existing on the motherboard. Intel is diff, there is a plate for them.

You are correct, again:) I did not remember the extra bit from the old mobo socket, they screw into the standard holes. Its all in now, temps look much better. Cinebench 1K extra score, max temp 60C and silent!

Is running DDR5 @1.5v for the VDD and VDDQ voltages OK? Temps seem to max out at approx. 56 Celsius (in Prime95).

My RAM doesn't seem to be completely stable at 1.45v, when the CAS latency is set below 36.

There's a datasheet I found on another site, suggesting that 1.5v is the maximum for SK-Hynix DDR5 modules:

I tried running the VDD and VDDQ at 1.55v very briefly, but the AIDA64 benchmark almost crashes immediately.

Interesting, I would guess that my motherboard just can't support higher DRAM voltages.

Overclocking the infinity fabric and DDR5 settings can be difficult (with complete stability).

Generally, I think RAM will work fine with the XMP profile set, as long as the modules are mentioned on a motherboard's QVL list (with XMP or EXPO verified).

A few CTD, it does not like the GPU undervolt i used on my old pc, reduced it a bit and it seems ok now. Dont know if I should disable the iGPU, it was good to have for testing but have put my GPU in now. Also, getting errors in the event viewer for stornvme: "The driver detected a controller error on \Device\RaidPort4.". I dont have RAID and it only happens once on boot so?
 
I am happy with my choice of CPU etc. But my god I made a bad choice on the cooler and motherboard.
The motherboard has that notorious ethernet controller that causes loads of problems.
Mine just constantly disconnects. I've looked at fixes, changing firmware etc. It's just bad so I now use Wi-Fi and I may get a USB network adaptor as a backup as I don't want a card inside.

I have had no more startup issues since I updated the BIOS/ reset and then change the settings back.

There was no way I was going to take my whole PC apart because of the ethernet. Like I run out of enthusiasm building it in the first place lol. That would mean I probably just give up lol.
Oddly, the Wi-Fi actually seems faster than the ethernet anyway, which I'm surprised about.

I'm more than happy with it outside of the ethernet and that is something I choose to live with when I weight it up against the effort to take everything apart again.

Why they went with that Intel controller I do not know. It's not like it's a secret how bad it is. I didn't even think to check before I bought the motherboard.

I had an Asrock B450 ITX board a few years ago and the boards Wifi had issues. Random blue screens. I returned it and got a BioStar board, X370 that never miseed a beat. A week later asrock dropped a bios update that fixed the issue!

Sods law. Trust me, I did think about sending it back considering the cost, but the overall effort involved just filled me with dread so it's something I can live with.
