Best headset for VR gaming experience - Vive PRO 2 or Valve Index?

I just wanted to ask what you thought about the 2 head sets?

I was told, the best of both worlds is the Valve Index controllers combined with the Vive Pro 2 headset?

Also, how much does the GPU help towards the VR experience. I ordered the 6900xt during black friday, but am very tempted to try and get a 7900XTX next week if possible?

Thanks in advance for any replies.
 
Both headsets are technically last gen in terms of optics, resolution and tracking, and require fixed base stations and are tethered by cables.

Newer headsets with clearer lenses and inside out tracking and wireless PC streaming are available, with more advanced ones on the way.

They're still great headsets but you have to realise that they are no longer the latest tech.

However there is no definitive best headset right now because they all have good and bad features.
 
BTW I have and Index and a Quest 2 and both get used for different use cases. Sims and high detail PC games for the Index and wireless stand alone and PC streamed games for the Quest 2.

Would you say in terms of resolution, is the Vive Pro 2 the one to get if you want the best overall experience?
 
Vive Pro 2 has better resolution, but the Index has better lenses, FOV, audio and better comfort.

Also if you're going for a Steam VR setup with basestation tracking then Index controllers are essential.

To be honest the resolution is the biggest issue for me with regard to the Index as it's now noticably lower than other headsets, and you have to supersample to get a decent image. If Valve offered an Index 1.5 with higher resolution panels then I would be happy to upgrade to use for sims and other games where a tether doesn't get in the way.

I have a permanent Index setup and I am using it less and less now as Q2 is more convenient with higher resolution (but lower FOV), and the vast majority of games look great over wireless.

I still use the Index for PC VR mainly because the image is uncompressed over a display port connection but Q2 with link cable and increased bitrate looks pretty good.
 
Also if you are using AMD graphics cards then it is best to stick with a display port tethered headset as AMD cards don't have as good video encoding as Nvidia cards, which is what's used for Q2 and Pico wireless and USB video encoded PC VR.

i've neither owned a vive pro 2 or index but have read many comments about them. the vive pro is high resolution but supposed to have bad glare/godrays, this hmd really does seem to split opinion. the index is generally highly regarded but as Ravenger says it is quite old tech now, the resolution is low compared to newer headsets. i think there are better options such as the quest 2/pico 4 if you're going to be playing mainly room scale games or hp reverb G2 if you're going to be mainly simming.
 
I think I'll go with the index controllers with the Vive Pro 2 headset as I would like to have the best visual experience. It would be nice to try them both to find out which one feels/works the best. I'm surprised that there isn't a clear contender at the moment.

Hold off a moment, and Rav may be recommending the Quest Pro, bit more expensive though.
 
Quest Pro is not really a great fit for an AMD GPU due to the video encoding requirements, unless the latest GPUs are better at video encoding than the earlier ones.
 
I have read of people who have Vive Pros or Reverb G2s selling them when they get Quest Pros because the visuals are so much clearer. The resolution isn't hugely greater but the lens clarity and colours and contrast are massively better. Plus the Quest Pro controllers track as well as the Index ones.

I would say the Index controllers aren't as amazing as many people say as a lot of content doesn't really take advantage of them and the grip mechanism can be very finicky on lots of games.

The Quest controllers are in practice almost as good.

Sounds great.. but anything Facebook/Meta related is an immediate dislike to me tbh.
 
no love for the reverb G2? sure the controller tracking is not as good as the index but its ok, you have joint best in class audio (same as index) and lovely high Res visuals.

it's not perfect by any stretch but I love mine and the newer ones are better than mine
 
G2 is great for sims. Latest versions have better camera placement for controller tracking. However the controllers eat batteries, can only take expensive 1.5v rechargables and don't have capacitive touch which adds better hand presence for games.
