Russia has started work to repair the section of the Crimean Bridge railway across the Kerch strait, which was significantly damaged in an explosion last October.
The Crimean Bridge is a 19km road and rail connection across the Kerch strait between Krasnodar on the Russian mainland and Kerch in annexed Crimea, which opened in 2018. A massive blast on 8 October 2022, suspected to be caused by Ukraine,
destroyed a section of the road bridge and saw several spans collapse into the water below. The fire transferred to an oil tanker on the adjacent rail bridge, causing it significant structural damage as well.
Russia worked rapidly to repair and reopen the road bridge six months ahead of schedule. It is now working to repair the rail bridge, which was a crucial artery in the nation’s war efforts, as it carried resources and troops into Crimea, where they could be spread to the forces on the front line in Ukraine.
A military historian and researcher has spread images of Russia’s repair efforts on the rail bridge online. It shows that one span of the rail bridge has been entirely removed for remediation works to take place.
