*** Show us your Dogs ***

One has a bit of a squint as she must have run into a branch or something, all good now.

Hazel looking pretty after her groom. She loves people (don't know why - I don't lol!). Oh, and hedgehogs. She loves hedgehogs, 4 days on the trot now she's found one and lost 2 balls in the process. We get close to a big reed bed and she's off with ball in her mouth looking for a hedgehog and drops it somewhere in the undergrowth. Pest.

Can anyone recommend a good guide or tips for recall.

Got some great fenced in fields near me, that when it's quiet, I would love to let Maddie off the lead in.
Problem is I can't trust her when there's another dog insight, she's off to say hello no matter how many time you scream her name.

Positive reward training is best, something high value if necessary. We usually start off small, say in the garden and then work up from there. It doesn't always work, one of ours can still be a pita when there is a child and all she want to do is lick its face so you have to be proactive sometimes, how hard it is sometimes depend on how independently minded the dog is.

I am most truly sorry to hear Max has died, your love for him was very clear, sincerest condolences Greatzbridge.

So the new addition to rhe family is a gun dog? I look forward to hearing more about him / her.

A very long cord that is light so not immediately a heavy drag on the dog's collar and the willingness to make it clear if it doesn't at least stop it will have its neck jarred. A dog that won't at least stop and stand there, if not immediately come back is a liability to both itself and you. If a long leash didn't cure it it would have a shock collar on if it were mine. I can hear the howls of anguish, but round here a dog running amok amongst livestock is very soon a dead dog. Even away from livestock the public's attitude to even a small dog "out of control" is highly negative these days. Be firm, very firm.

Someone the other month told me of a shoot they went on and someone's dog was running riot and not under command, so the owner just shot the dog dead. Now that seemed a tad harsh.... But people who kill hundreds of pheasants in a day only to bury them in a pit are a bit off, IMHO.
