Is it just me or is it foolish to tell the enemy you are preparing a counter offensive.
Its warfare, its hardly rocket science, of course they would be planning a counter. whats the alternative? hold positions for eternity? give up?
As long as they dont divulge plans on where, when and with what composition of forces.

Sending their plans to CW on here obv . His the daddy tactitian, his running out of russian soldiers on his kitchen table so using chicken nuggets to sweep to the floor dogs eat emm so everyones a winner apart from that bare chested hunk on a horse.

I think they will, I cannot see any other possibility.
From everything I have seen its little more than smoking rubble now :(

And that’s where the MOABs come in if:

1. All Ukrainian civilians and military personnel have been evacuated

2. Ukraine believes the West will fund Marshall Plan 2 for rebuilding Ukraine.

3. The USA will lend you one and the C130 to drop it from, though I expect any suitably large cargo aircraft can quickly be modified to do so.

No point wasting UA men and material if you can kill every last Russian from a safe distance.

In as few numbers that US have them in, Ukraine will never see them.

one of the things people seem to misunderstand when it comes to this stuff yes there is a lot of trash and decrepit equipment but a percentage of it is functional stuff and that still makes up a significant amount overall.
Another thing many misunderstand is how some of these museum pieces are being used. I.E it's very easy to laugh off the re-introduction of 70 year old T-55 tanks and the mental image of them helplessly bouncing shells off an advancing Challenger as it mows them all down is tasty. But in reality they are being used as howitzers and it's actually quite a smart move because their gun is from a WW2 tank destroyer and fires a type of ammunition that nothing else uses of which they have a plentiful supply. The one drawback is that tank guns aren't designed for continuous fire and so they're wearing them out faster than normal.

If you're trying to advance across a field and dozens of 100mm high explosive shells start raining down your first though is not going to be "it's okay, they're obsolete", especially if you spot the drone that's providing live footage of where the shells are landing so the gunners can dial their in on you.

Is surprise not a thing in War then ?
It can still be a surprise. Russia dont know when or where its going to come from. Lots of probing will be happening at the moment looking for weaknesses and keeping Russia on their toes, second guessing and forcing troop movements to reinforce area they suspect will be the focus of a deliberate offensive.
Though Ukraine likely wont launch a full counter offensive until they are fully prepared. In the meantime they will likely continue probing defenses, gathering intel on Russian force concentrations, and just waiting for the right moment. The reality is that Ukraine probably dont have any solid date/time or location in mind as yet. They will likely have multiple COA's prepared. However, the actual trigger for the offensive will likely be short notice and in reaction to an Identified weakness or gap in defenses.

I thought there were books dedicated to the importance of surprise in war but i guess little you must be right.
Apologies, my reply wasn’t meant to appear as arsey as it did - it was actually meant in jest but I’m posting from my mobile and can’t add emojis which might have made the post less dickish!

I'm glad to see the inevitable decision on F16s has finally been made. Why the US and others have to play this game of saying no to everything for ages first before saying yes, I do not get.

Hopefully the Ukrainians will at least be able to fire missiles into Russian airspace even if they aren't allowed to fly the F16s into it. If they aren't, it means Russian planes can still lob endless cheap glide bombs and cruise missiles from Russian airspace.

Psyops mainly, there are domestic and global audiences to consider when making statements.

I wonder if Russian aircraft have been coming closer to the border to try and intercept whatever Ukraine are launching Storm Shadow from.
Odds on most likely an Su-27 or Su-24, and an outside bet of a Mirage 2000.

My working theory being that France (co-creators of the Storm Shadow) already had experience of the the Su-27 family weapons systems from back when they made the Exocet work with them so that would be their easiest route to getting the SS working on a Ukrainian jet, if not the Su-27 then the Su-24 is the Ukrainian jet most suited for the role. If neither of them then the west probably skipped making them work with Soviet jets and gave them something old that was already SS compatible, and France is more likely to hand over a Mirage 2000 than Germany is to hand over a Tornado.

And there was no need to make an announcement, training and prep has clearly been going on anyway it was never a case of make an announcement and the. The planes are ready to go the next day!

Will be interesting to see who hands over the planes the F16 is used all over the place.
