Chocolate though I’m on another level and once I start…!

My way of dealing with chocolate is to buy the high cacao stuff - 80% or greater. There's no way I'd want to scoff a whole block of that like I would do with white/milk/blonde but it still gives me enough of the chocolate texture in my mouth to satisfy any cravings. Plus it's healthier too.

after watching so many youtube videos , it seems you just dont need to fully remove everything sweet from you life. i just replace cakes and choc with home made protein cakes using oats , or protein pancakes along with the range of protein yogurts from aldi or lidl. even protein french toast is quite filling and nice using vanilla protein. last protein cakes i made using rasberrys and blueberrys was really nice

Yeah I’ve been seeing so many TikTok videos with tips on weight loss. Some of them are so blindingly obvious but it needs someone else to tell you before you take notice. Don’t ever restrict anything is the most useful one. Last night I fancied an ice cream so I had one. I just know not to eat an entire tub of the stuff. So I don’t buy the tubs, just the lollies now.

Wife has a bar of 99% lindt, give that a go, will last you for months :D

I need people to stop buying me sweets! Yesterday was helping my mother in law out with some DIY and as a thank you she bought me a pack of cookies and 2 bags of sports mix sweets. Similar again from the kids for fathers day.

Definitely proves snacking is my issue as the weight has crept up since returning from Spain. Roll on getting back out there!

I know this is a weight loss thread, but I'm up to 98kg (from 94-95kg) but have shed 1.3% BF (proper calliper measurements - I'm now around 14.7%) over the past 6 months. My most recent blood test have come back with really good lipid profile, my cholesterol ratio has increased, my HDL levels have also increased. I have spent a lot of time improving my diet. I went through a bit of a hard time last year, I was comfort eating a lot, and not really pushing myself to do much exercise or activity.

I've improved my sleep quality and sleep hygiene significantly, leave my phone downstairs and read a book before bed - that's helped enormously. I also treat myself to a cold shower every day. I mean cold, i.e. just cold water. It's ******* horrible, but I can't stop doing it! :D

My training intensity has increased significantly over the last 6 months. I do strength training 3x a week and BJJ 2-3x a week but also have been walking a lot more as well as swimming 2x a week. My diet although calorific has been devoid of chocolates, crisps, sugar and basically "treats", and don't miss it at all. That said it has taken a lot of effort to wean myself off my poor dietary choices. I've been bulk buying nuts and oats and sesame seeds and other seeds and making nutty flapjacks with also some locally sources honey. Yes probably not super healthy, but I now stuff my face on those instead. I make a good 3-4 batches at a time which lasts a few weeks and actually relatively cheap to do.

Oily fish, chicken, beef and egg intake has been my main source of protein, and lentils and chickpeas as well for fibre. The advantage is you can add herbs and spices quite easily to vary it. I seem to easily get through several kg of peas, sweet corn, broccoli and carrots a week!

I have added some protein shakes to my diet too to plug the gaps when I need them. I also spent a bit of money with sports and nutrition expert, they basically told me what I already knew to a certain degree, but helped understand really what my body needs and cut through a lot of the suppositions I had made - they've given a far more in depth analysis such as the non exercise activity thermogenesis, and a lot of the other thermogenic effects of food and dietary choices, and exercise activities / intensity, as well as a plethora of other things from my blood tests etc... I won't share the report as it's a) personal to me b) I spent some money on it :D c) It won't apply to others and don't want people to take on bad advice. However it turns out I need more calories than I had anticipated - but also it does vary with activity, i.e. if I have done 1.5hrs of BJJ, I need a different amount of calories to 60 mins of strength training, vs, a day of not intense exercise but lots of walking / standing etc.... The options / variables were presented in a bit of a dynamic matrix which is really helpful. On a "low" calorie day I need around 3.5kcals, on my most intense days I need 4.3kcals - so quite a difference. Also depending on how much coffee and other neurotransmitter and CNS stimulating supplements or activities I have a bit of a ratio to multiply that to my daily intake.

Now I haven't been given a diet plan or anything like that, the calorie requirements are just guidelines - as usual, it's better to average them out over a week. Now I'm not trying to lose weight really, more avoid dad bod and middle age spread! :D They've left me to make up my own mind, but actually it was really insightful and as usual completely underestimated my calorie intake. This sort of intensity isn't really sustainable as a nearing mid 40 year old, but I'm determined and driven to be healthy predominantly for my kids. At my dojo the guys and girls don't believe I'm in my mid 40s, which is good, but I tell you what, my joints do remind me that I am! :D

Not sure what this post was about really, I guess it's more to highlight that even if you know what you're doing, sometimes getting 3rd person perspective or advice is worthwhile as it's sometimes easy to get lost in the noise of life, and sometimes it can be that helpful guiding hand to make sure you're not veering off track.

Also learning to be kind to yourself and not beating yourself up if you're not perfect week in week out, That's helped me a lot, because although I had a rough year last year, I've proven that with a little kindness to myself and a tiny bit of effort I can bring myself back around.

Could you take them to a food bank perhaps, rather than eat them yourself?

If it would be better for you to not consume snacks?

@Freefaller good post.

What service do you use for blood tests, i've been looking into this recently, mid 40's and want a closer eye on things. Google searches just seem to turn up endless test at home kits that when you dig further, are quite hit and miss on service.

Great question. Literally about 90 minutes ago I opened a tab (to check later) about blood tests... although this was more about prostate cancer (PSA test)... which I guess is a completely different kind of test?

PSA tests are notorious for false positives iirc but better than no check I guess - i'm fairly sure you can get it done via NHS however, worth a try, obviously GP/practice dependent.

For bloods these are all ones I've used at one point or another. Medichecks, The blood lab, E-val blood analysis, Youth revisited, Optimale, Randox.
There's loads out there they're all basically resellers for the actual testing labs of which there's only a handful so in most cases pick whoever is cheapest for what you want to test as they all end up in the same few path labs anyway.

I go to a private medical practice for it. I ask for a full hormone and lipid test (they do do the PSA test as well, but if you're in your 40s you'll have to get used to a finger up the bum! :D).

It costs around £150-170ish (they sometimes have discounts) - I do them every 6 months and they're worth every penny. You can buy kits online, but you'll still need to see a nurse or a GP to get the blood sample to then send back to their labs.

What you CAN do, is if you give blood get them to take the samples then, but that requires timing! I've done that twice, it depends on the blood bank, I know the staff at mine and they're always amenable to it but probably breaking the rules doing that, but shhhhh.

Actually that's a great shout, a lot of TRT specialists offer quite cheap kits - the only thing you need to do is find a nurse or your local GP to take the sample. DO NOT TRY AND TAKE A VENOUS SAMPLE YOURSELF!

I'd considered doing that before but never actually given it a go, might ask next time I go in.

Optimale are very cheap for a pretty comprehensive panel and there's normally a 10/15% off code that pops up first time you visit their site. They can book you into some Superdrugs to have your blood drawn as well.

I have a free blood test thingy through work, but they sent a vile to fill and some stabby things... but when I stabbed I could barely get any blood out, definitely wasn't going to fill a vile, so gave up... :(

I'm not sure if they're allowed to do it, but once the needle is in they have a diverter valve and always take samples for disease screening, but I'm charming :D

Are optimale any good? Maybe I'll try them next time.

The finger stab ones are generally a bit rubbish, as you've found it can be difficult to actually get the required amount of blood out and I've also found the results inconsistent with venous draws I've had done at similar times.

I do not possess your level of charm but hey the worst they can say is no :D

Yeah absolutely fine, like I said it all goes to the same lab a lot of the time anyway and as Optimale are primarily trying to sell people TRT they are pretty quick at getting the results emailed out to you once they're back from the lab.

They're awful - you actually need 2 vials at least to do a more accurate analysis.
