Because the UK doesn't have a regional income tax system. So in words of ten letters or less please explain why national tax payers money should continue to prop up a service exclusively for people travelling through or in London.
AFAIK it'll also be in part due to the withdrawl of funding from the government since (IIRC) BoJo stopped being mayor. This is once again due to the incompetent government. The bailout they gave TfL during Covid came with attachments so they have to find ways to increase revenue.

But in some cases, the removal of the travelcard will increases prices by 50-60%. That's not just amending the pricing structure.I'm afraid that if it is because of Covid and a long term reduction of travellers into London through WFH etc., one should cut ones cloth to suit. Subsidising excess seats and journeys would seem inappropriate. If every journey is rampacked then amending the fare structure as has been proposed is the answer and rinning more services.
Same when going from London to elsewhere. Easy and cheaper to grab a flight. It's crazy. It is genuinely cheaper to fly to Madrid that to go to London for a weekend.
Bit of a broken system really.
If go by train to London it's even worse. I never use the trains in the UK anymore. Even one person it's cheaper and less hassle to drive if you have a car.
Now they are making travel within London more expensive?

Travel within London isn’t getting more expensive as such. It’s impacting people that previously bought paper travel cards included with their tickets from outside of London.
Because our government can't afford it, bit by bit cost cutting measures. This is when you know there are real problems, yet trying to hide how deep they are.AFAIK it'll also be in part due to the withdrawl of funding from the government since (IIRC) BoJo stopped being mayor.
I wouldn't really call it eye wateringly expensive, you can travel many miles for a few pounds. The network is exceedingly well connected and regular too so it is much faster to travel around London on public transport than a lot of places. In my area, there are places where basically you have no choice but to take a taxi unless you want to walk for a couple of hours, which is a lot more expensive than the equivalent journey would be on London public transport. It's eye wateringly expensive to use public transport in London.
Understand but as far as I am aware that does not constitute as a mainline travel card, just a zone travel card.I wouldn't really call it eye wateringly expensive, you can travel many miles for a few pounds. I just plugged in a random long distance journey from east to west London, Greenwich to West Ruislip. That's well over 20 miles and costs £3.60 offpeak / £5.60 peak.
The excellent public transport is one of the few redeeming features London has IMO.
Yeah basically, all paper travelcard tickets are going to disappear. "Passengers travelling from outside the capital will be expected to use contactless or Oyster cards on arrival."Hold on, is this the London zone 1-2 card that gets me to London and then a tube journey to the office for one price?
Or something more specific?
This.Terrible decision which doesn't feel like it should be in the competetence of the Mayor's office given that the only people who it impacts are those who could not vote for him.
