Putin: What is the plan to deal with this Nazi superweapon?
Shoigu: Don't worry boss, they're useless in the rain, once the summer ends they will be of no threat and we will have taken Kiev long before next summer!
Putin: Excellent, all going to plan.
Gerasimov: Guys I just read on twi- I mean X that Elon Musk is sending A0 size laminators to Ukraine.
Putin: Mother of god....
You can actually get cardboard that's completely water resistant.

The reason doesn't make sense, calculate further actions? I wonder if it's because people would be shocked at the real numbers and they wonder if people would question what on earth is going on.

It makes perfect sense

If the russians dont know how many fighters ukraine has left they have to assume that attacks will meet with heavier resistance than perhaps might be the case.

Its not the first nor will it be the last time in war that making the enemy think, or at least second guess that you have a bigger force than you do is a valid tactic.

There was an interesting interview earlier this week before it got removed. Russian media interviewed a medic who had come back from Ukraine and he stated that he saw a large lack of basic medical training for front line troops, a large lack of basic medical supplies and he estimated that about 50% of Russian deaths could have been avoided if they had access to first class medical support - he went on to say a lot of Russian soldiers were dying due to lack of supplies and medical equipment

Following on from this, seems like more articles coming out saying figures were actually around 70k dead not 17k. Rolling back figures with the soon to be released real figures?

Interesting point here:

It makes sense if your a military planner. If you know the other side has lost x number of troops they might encourage you to launch an all out assault to capture the next important town or city.

Remember the tampons as basic first aid photos?

People have forgiven the German people. I think in part because they have never tried to play down what they did and are genuinely ashamed as a nation for the crimes their ancestors committed.

I do agree that Putin is up there with the other monsters from recent history.
I didnt imply that the German people were anything other than like us, good and bad but normal just the same like us.

Hitler brought out the worst in people. he poisoned their minds with hate, hate everything, his speeches were relentless, the jews this the jews that he turned everyone against anything and anyone that wasn't pure aryan, it led to the holocaust and history as we know it.

Putin is trying to go down that path, the numbers will never be as high but he will if he can wipe out who opposes him and replace them with his people.

Sadly its happening again this time its in a place just a few years ago you would never think possible, the USA, Trump is on a march to be just like his heroes, he worships Putin, sends love letters to Kim and admires Xi greatly

his speaches are also relentless poisoning the minds of the idiots and there is a scary amount of them listening, millions in fact, an armed insurrection is a serious threat in the US and there is a scary amount ready to fight for him

If it wasn’t for the Ukrainians willingness and capacity to defend themselves, I’m sure the death toll and level of atrocities would be many times what they are currently.

Obviously it makes sense to not report sensitive information real time! But I'm talking transparency overall, how else can there be a judge of success or failure? How else can there be any accountability or informed choice?

The people who need to know will have access to the information.

Germans have arrested a businessman who was selling electronic components to Russia used in its drones. Few days ago they also arrested a different person for selling parts used in sniper rifles to Russia

By those of those arrested are Russian citizens

War isn’t transparent or easily quantified because you have a dispersed population and areas of no go. How many people are buried in unmarked graves? How many have gone to ground or have been forced to become transient?

Right now all we know is that the Ukrainians are winning and taking less military casualties.

I mean didn't the US/UK only start declassifying information from WW2 roughly 30 years after the war?

Propoganda, deception, "loose lips sink ships" and all that. The information war is very much real.

About what?

It is war, unfortunately the reality is both sides will be taking losses.

Maintaining secrecy over the losses provides many benefits, most notably, morale and intel.

Well for a starters people that live in the country? Surely they would like to know what the government is doing with their literal lives of themselves (if men) and of their families. The BBC casually throws in the remark that the figure may have jumped from 17k to 70k on the back of a failed counter attack.

Again I'm not talking about real time information, but overall transparency is surely expected to a point if people will give their lives potentially to the government?

Isn't that backwards? If the Ukrainians hadn't defended themselves, the war would have been over in a week, a new pro-Russian administration would be in Kiev, several hundred thousand people would still be alive and the buildings/infrastructure would be largely intact.
