Richmond sausages - why

When Richmond sausages are on offer, customers buy them like there's no tomorrow. What's so special about them? They have the lowest pork content (42%) to class themselves as a pork sausage. They are bloody awful. The cost of meat/kg is higher in Richmond sausages than a supermarket premium sausage
 
They are pretty bad.

If you cook them slowly and avoid overcooking them so to try to keep as much of the fat in them as possible, and cover them in ketchup, they are just about palatable.

Lower meat content sausages are easier to chew and digest than high content ones.

they also contain more fat which gives the meat more moisture. The skins are also thinner, making them easier to cut or bite through without pulling it apart.
 
If all you've ever eaten is *****, you wouldn't know any better... My wife always said she hated sausages, because she grew up being fed Richmonds.

First time I actually got her to try proper boerewors, it was like Archimedes leaping out of the bath. This was swiftly followed with Lincolnshire, Cumberland, venison and various German wursty types.
Unfortunately she's mostly latched onto those weird caramelised onion ones from the supermarket Finest ranges, but at least she can now appreciate a proper good sausage.

Of course, all the obvious jokes apply...

My wife bought some from ALDI two weeks ago because they had run out of the normal ones we have.
After eating one I refused to eat any more until she bought some of my usual ones today.
They were horrible.

Indeed. Absolutely awful. Anybody who buys these needs new tastebuds.
 
Local butchers are usually hard to beat for a decent sausage tbf.

Supermarket stuff is full of preservatives and just not the same imo. Ok some are decent, but your local butcher will be better in most cases.

i live close to a Pork farm who make their own.

£8 for 12 massive sausages, they heavily salt them though. I guess as a natural preservative
 
I got chatting to the chap in the local corner shop and don't know why but the topic turned to sausages. He used to work there apparently, he just shook his head and said you really don't want to eat those. I guess you could think that about many mass produced things, its always stuck with me though.

My eldest who is 36 and been vegan for 4 years used to work at Pork Farms when she was 18.
She came home on her first day and claimed that she would never eat another Pork Pie, Sausage Roll or Chicken Nugget ever again after seeing how they were made.
She was still a meat eater until 4 years ago though.
