car stolen. security recommendations for next car

Not sure how easy it is, especially on a modern car. But a lot of people with the fiesta st put a fuel pump kill switch on.Which is relatively cheap and physical barrier that is difficult to get around, unless they find the switch. Might be enough to deter the brain dead that won't want to mess around.

I use a steering wheel lock, but I watched the cctv of a friend's being stolen with one on, and it was gone in under a minute. They just cut the wheel and took it off....

There's also the issue of some immobilisers causing issues with ecus too.

I think the only real means of protection is house protection, cctv, bollard etc.

thank you all for your replies.
the more i research and read it makes me think a multi protection approach on the car . a good movemnt detection light on the drive and also a bollard if i can find a suitable one that does not look like it could just be kicked down on the drive.
i need to find a alarm fitter or auto electrician i guess who will do a few things for me. move the OBD port, or rarther fit another in a hidden place leaveing the original as a dummy. fit a kill switch somewhere maybee..
a concealed gps/gprs/4g/vhf tracker, with a cheap one on the battery for them to find. an immobiliser and/or alarm . really cannot decide on the alarm immobiliser. pandora claims to be good but 99% of reviews and hype and by them and they have 1000's of fitters everywhere making me think if thye have so many fitters they they could have just as many theives who know how to bypass. so a ghost 2 wiht pin protection for immobiser and possible a seperate keyfob activated alarm

halfords do a bollard locking one for £30, just need to bolt it down and off you go

looked many times at these however loads if videos showing them being removed in just a few seconds :(
Really? Is there a vid of a Disklok steering wheel lock of the correct size for the steering wheel and properly fitted being quickly/easily/quietly removed? I'd be interested to see that as i use 1 myself, have done for years, never had a car stolen.

Dunno if it's a Disklok but...

Thanks. It looks similar to a Disklok but hard to say, they just yank it off  , shocking if it is a Disklok as afaik they are pretty highly thought of...
I know if they are wrong size for the wheel (they come in 3 sizes) then yes they're useless. I'd like to see a proper test of a properly fitted 1. Will do some googling.

Edit : just seen the steering wheel came off too lol! Well, not much you can do to guard against for that. I don't think they'll be stealing the car after that though.

Some of the organised groups are using quite sophisticated methods and going through security systems in seconds even physical. Though one lot ironically got caught because the roller shutter they were trying to open had 2 locking points instead of the 1 they were expecting and they phoned the ring leader for advice not realising the security camera captured audio...

Absolute scum of the earth these type of people.

Ever since the attempt on our home for our car keys I have simply blocked my car in with my partners car, it’s a chore but hopefully enough of a deterrent for them to not try again.

It’s amazing how often our Ring Door Bell picks up motion of someone lurking with face covered at 2/3/4AM walking by and then back again couple of minutes later… Up to no good!

Been looking at cars and can’t help not wanting something that is commonly targeted, but why should I not have what I want!

I'd personally go as far as a bollard but after that just let them take the car if they really want to, the last thing you want is several undesirable types breaking into your home in the middle of the night and at best threatening you with a knife or at worse doing something a lot lot worse.

The last thing you want to be doing is aggravating those types of people by putting in hidden switches or whatever, sometimes they're chancers but others they're hardened organised criminals who will think nothing of turning to violence.

A bollard is simply locked by a padlock isn't it? A bolt cutter will deal with that in seconds.

If there's a lock on it then a lock picking tool will also take seconds surely? Admittedly I've not read anything about bollards.

Edit: I just watched the lock picking lawyer on YouTube pick a circular lock in 3 minutes, assuming they're determined I'm sure that wouldn't hold them up. Might deter though, you never know.

One guaranteed and 100% free way to make sure your vehicle can't ever be driven away is to simply remove the HT lead completely and take it away with you whenever you park. I used to do that on an old E30 BMW back in the 80s and it only took a few seconds with no tools needed but I don't know if more modern vehicles still have engine parts as easily accessible now. I'll be checking my 72 plate later to see if I can still pull the HT lead out.

This is a good thread.

I've got a Jaguar XE & there have been multiple thefts on the FB group i'm in where from the ring doorbell camera footage they just appear to be able to walk up to the car, unlock it (even non keyless) spend 20 -30 seconds faffing around inside & then simply drive away.

One of them did it in broad daylight whilst the owner was home, they were pulling away before he even realised what was happening.

I'm now looking at steering locks.

Might not be driven away but could be towed away, although not sure how many cars get towed away. I do know someone who thought their car was towed away, years ago, whilst they were on holiday, I can't remember why they came to this conclusion but they did.

It's ridiculous that we are back in times where you need a crook lock on your steering wheel again!

I haven't been sniffing around cars to actually know who is or isn't doing it but honestly I thought it was only me still using a stoplock because I'm paranoid about my new car

This is what happens when you live in a society with no consequences sadly. The cops don't care, and you can't defend your property the good old fashioned way because you'll end up in jail.

This is a great article that go over the technical details on how it's done on Toyota's. Doesn't require them to get into the car, and no relay boxes needed

My friends Lexus was jacked from his driveway a few months back. Wasn't even 60 seconds
