Well when you say 'takes one out' you mean it hit one with a HE?! shell and both russian tanks drove away.

Not ideal really when a 2nd or 3rd tier russian tank can basically walk away from the latest European MBT.

What I don't understand is why European countries are taking delivers of the latest Leo 2s A8 variant while giving ukraine Leo 1's... with it's inferior gun, Hull, turret armour etc

Why not just give them the latest tanks, no other countries in Europe really.needs A8's right now as they aren't at war.

Indeed. The fact that Wagner was just an extension of the Russian Security Services acting overseas was common knowledge long before the invasion of Ukraine started. Wagner also got a taste of western fire power in 2018 in Syria in an incident known as the battle of Khasham, I’d doubt they’d be keen to repeat the experience.

The Leopard missed it’s first shot. The Russian tanks used smoke and retreated it seemed.

What about former Soviet states European countries that aren't in NATO? e.g. Finland and Sweden. I could have seen Russia testings NATOs resolve by invading those two if Ukraine had been steam rolled

The current discussion was sparked by a quote from a Russian general stating that conflict with the rest of "Eastern Europe" was inevitable.

There's no universal definition of "Eastern Europe" but it's typically (in this context) considered to mean Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Poland, Romania, etc.

In that context, the point remains that attacking any of those countries is a whole different ballpark than attacking Ukraine. Due, of course, to NATO membership. A point reinforced by how desperate Ukraine is to join ASAP.

Ukraine has paid a heavy price for such limited gains this year, will anyone bother to negotiate or will we see another 50-100k dead young men next year?

Russia invaded (and captured) Finland in 1808 and were part of the Russian empire until 1917.

To be fair they are not Russia as it stands today. Russia of today rose out of the ashes of destroying imperial Russia. Ironically they've gone almost full circle and ended up with a despot in charge again.

What price do you think Ukrainians would pay living under Putin's reign of terror enlightened and benevolent democracy?

Mind you, I hear the gulags are lovely this time of year.
