fair enough but my main point is the expense. IF all rail costs that much then tell me I am wrong but I still want an independent investigation as to why it cost so much . I also think it is a stretch to suggest HS2 will free up capacity for any other journeys as well , such as Cambridge to Oxford or Sheffield to Newcastle.... as such it's a huge expense for such a tiny part of the country .
but again if I am wrong so be it, if it's just media hate blowing out of proportion..... but an independent investigation into the costs and where the money went would show this.
I would love better rail as it is daft that it is cheaper AND faster for me to travel single occupancy in a car and I DO want freight off the road and onto rail. I just don't believe HS2 will really change much of either of these things.... and that massive expense could have done so much good to one of our other public services failing even more.
but again.. they have started now. stopping would mean all that expense so far would be for naught . they need to push on.

They're expected to can the route going to Euston and have it stop at Old Oak Common instead....
Why not? You obviously have read very little into HS2 and what it will actually do if you believe such things.
The real damage here is uncertainty and always scaling back the project, the more it is scaled back the fewer benefits can be realised.

This country makes a rod for its own back on infrastructure.
Nimby`s here, environmental ******** their, it looks ugly and upsets the countryside.... Fact is we have been upsetting the countryside since we chopped down all the forests to build ******* warships.
It should be compulsory purchase at 3 x Market value and if it was bought that property within the past 18 months you get back what you paid for it. To stop insider backhanders or it goes to appeal and your background and relationship to anyone in the decision making process (including friends/family) is reviewed.
It would be halfway to being built now if it wasn't for the above. I am sure their is savings to be had in the construction as well with backhanders to private firms who are 50x price on materials as its government spending.
Get it built, to Brum, get it build to Manchester, Liverpool and Glasgow, get it built to Nottingham, get it built to sheffield, Leeds, York & Edinburgh and up to Inverness/Aberdeen.

Its shocking it's often cheaper for 1 person in a car and nearly always if you're sharing.

i can agree with that.... which is why i think now it was committed to they should see it through in its full form... but it HAS been scaled back so explain to me how HS2 it its CURRENT form can help me get from cambridge to oxford (it is relevant to me as i live near Cambridge) qucker and cheaper than in my car.
in its current form it is servicing such a small part of the country for such a large sum. IF we were talking a complete upgrade from the very north to the very south along with a bunch of East to West lines as well then i would be far more optimistic.
but it isnt, and be honest........ do you really see that ever happening now? this isnt going to be the 1st stage followed by expansion, it is yet more jam for those to and from London and sod everyone else as usual.
(and i would bet my mortgage with various backhanders and dodgy dealings added to boot)

I priced up train tickets from our house to the nearest airport......it was cheaper to book a taxi 
It wont happen now and the entire project has ruined any future investment in rail for decades to come imo.

Imagine 100 billion being spent on road network instead.
It is just a staggering amount really. The Lincoln bypass for example is going to cost 350 million when all done and will be great when finished.
You can have another 300 projects like that all over the UK instead of 1 rail line from London to Birmingham.
It all just a massive con for private construction firms to milk the tax payer and then continue to milk it when it is complete.
It is even more diabolical that something this large of a cost to the tax payer that is meant to be a democracy never had a say on it either.
£4.8bn to connect Old Oak Common to Euston. I know there will be a explainable reason but on the surface of it, nearly £5bn to connect something a handful of miles away seems eye watering.

I don't think anyone really questions that at least parts of HS2 were a good idea but its been handled (like most UK infrastructure projects) shambolically.
Being left with a faster line between London and Birmingham and nothing else is just bonkers, having spent a fair amount of time travelling for work in the North of England I was staggered as to how poor the rail connections are, that's where the money should have been spent.
I'm lucky enough (train wise) to live in Edinburgh which is well served whether I want to go West to Glasgow, North to the Highlands or South to England and I do tend to pick the train over the plane nowadays (Unless its Belfast!) but I do query whether the sheer cost of HS2 is worth it, and certainly I would have questioned whether a full extension to Glasgow and Edinburgh was really worth it.
The quickest train Edinburgh to KIngs Cross is currently 4 hours (1 a day which stops in Newcastle only I think) but generally its 4 hours 20 - by the time you travel to the airport, security, wait, delay, etc and then land at the other end its not far off the same total journey time, yes I'd love a 300mph train the length of Britain but we should have been doing this in the 70's and 80's, not now.

Pretty much the whole project has been a mess with billions of taxpayers money wasted. I've got a friend who regularly visits the sites and some of the 'work' being done is just an obvious gravy train for some contractors and companies.
I wouldn't be surprised if there is an inquiry at some point.

Not just to connect, build the new station as well. Its what, 7 miles through london. Its never going to be cheap and the entire line is useless without it for passengers, any time saved by going faster will be lost having to transfer from OOC to central london.

they can't even fix the potholes,so good luck them spending only 100 million on our road network,and, what needs joining up, that isn't joined up already anyway?
