why all the hate for hs2?

A non-psychotic country would be asking for jail time for anyone involved in this farce which is so clearly and transparently a scam concocted with the express sleight of hand to 'reform' planning laws only to never get around to it because it happens to provide a lot of useless Oxbridge chums with a lot of lots for their useless kids.

Spaffers rolled out to take one for the team.

Standard Sunday morning BBC Tory "agenda for the week" setting in full effect, "it would be crazy to not rethink".

Deftly avoiding the most important question: "Why do we need to rethink this Grant? Why?"

It's so obvious they want to cut the next Northern section, they're just trying to find the least damaging way to do so.

Ugh, I think that's insanity.

The project should never have been started in the first place, but once started we should stick with it. There is no point in a half-baked potato.

We also desperately need to change the laws in this country. We can not have a few people standing in the way of projects like this and costing the country millions. Most of the costs of this seem to be because it has been forced underground because of complainants. It's absolutely ridiculous.

Like it or not, the government was elected by the people, and they should be able to do what they want to do without legal action costing the people millions or even billions of pounds.

100bln is 4k per household. That's a huge amount of money.
It's worth noting that while it is a huge amount of money, it's also far less than the Victorians were throwing at rail projects (accounting for inflation of course) back in the day.

If HS2 had been built as it was supposed to be and then eventually extended to Scotland it would have been more than worth the money for a once in a century project that would have transformed transport in the UK.

Leave it to short sighted four year mentality governments to ruin everything >.>

my view is HS2 was a disaster from the get go. I would much rather improvements to the infrastructure as a whole rather than 1 super fast train through the country taking 20 mins off a trip to London.

BUT with that said once they committed to it and spent such an eye watering amount of cash they should see it through.
I also want an independent investigation to the money spent to make sure it is just incompetence and not corruption that lead to such huge overspend. with charges filed if it goes beyond incompetence

I was seeing something earlier that put this into some context.

Apparently just getting planning permission for IIRC a tunnel to help alleviate the congestion at the Dartford crossing cost more than the Swedish paid to actually tunnel though a mountain.
That's the planning costs in the UK were enough to do the entire job in another country.
And yet Crossrail could get funded to the cost of what, 18bn I think it was? All to get to one side of london to the other a bit quicker. Anything outside of london, forget it Andy Burnham was complaining today why is the north always seen as second class citizens? Well if he's second class the SW, W and northern ireland are definitely third class

It is, but it was private investment and they could expect to make a considerable return on their investment rail projects nowadays are seen as public funded projects that are basically a money pit

This, basically. I don’t care how much has already been spaffed away on this nonsense already, it needs to stop.

At least they got the projects finished in those days.

I am not sure if it would be worth the money. It would if they extended the project to include local transport in the cities it touches, but that would almost double the cost of the project.

But what we will end up with is yet another aircraft carrier with no planes.

It's so frustrating.

And why do these politicians think that everyone wants to travel to London anyway?

Oh, and in passing, I can't really believe that the government are saying with one hand we are broke and the other giving tax cuts. It's absolutely absurd. Even I know that makes no sense at all.

Again it's got nothing to do with time. Capacity hence why it needs to go to even more places.

As others have said it was never about speed, that was just a bonus. It was about capacity, adding high speed arterial links between the countries major cities/hubs would increase the amount of passengers who could travel by rail and at the same time reduce the amount of passenger trains on existing lines, freeing up track space for additional cargo trains, which would in turn reduce the amount of trucks on the motorway network and thus reducing motorway congestion and pollution.

Implemented correctly it would have been transformative for UK transport as a whole not just rail as it would have had knock on effects for the road network and even domestic air travel.
