The Indoor Riding/ Zwift/ TrainerRoad etc. Thread

I've been reading reviews on the Atom v2. Seems to be lag with ERG mode but I wonder as a non-pro whether it would even affect me. However, it is the most affordable. The tacx + looks great and has the incline/decline function but eye watering price tag.
I have an Atom v2. All the initial niggles have been ironed out and ERG is fine now. Absolutely love it - no regrets. Join "Wattbike Atom", and "Wattbike Atom Owners" FB groups and people often sell decent, little used models for £1,300 - £1,600.

Pretty good video from DC Rainmaker on the RGT/Wahoo situation...

I'm quite pleased as I've never really used RGT much and considered I was just paying for SYSTM, so quite happy I've just saved about £140 in the next year on my Zwift Membership. (Well, I assume I can pause it during summer again and make it last two years for free?)

It's not surprising news they have closed it down. I tried RGT a couple of times when I had a SYSTM subscription but there are not enough people to make racing interesting.

I hope the rumour of Traineroad and Zwift merger appears again. I'd love a weekly race that fits within a structured training plan.

I wonder if the new Zwift Cog will fit a Wahoo Kickr Core.
Would be brilliant for me using my mountain bike and constantly running out of gears.

I'm a long time Sufferfest / Systm subscriber and hadn't even installed RGT as I was already on Zwift. The years free Zwift subscription as compensation for not using RGT (which I wasn't using) is a nice saving!

I'm rather jealous as I had an internal conflict between getting a year of Trainerroad or SYSTM last month. In the end I went Trainerroad on a monthly subscription which I'm still debating if it is right for me as the mid volume plan is burning me out after just 3 weeks. I feel like I could do better with building my own plan on SYSTM that fits around my schedule.

I am considering buying a training program from TrainingPeaks as the more I look into training, the less convinced I become about using Zwift training programs. They are all over the place and seem a little more interested in making the workouts interesting than making them good or optimum. They are more focussed on mixing up the cadence and doing a mish-mash of things than focussing on the simple core of the session.

I don't mind paying for Zwift but honestly I watch youtube and netflix whenever I am on the trainer so the interactivity on Zwift isn't really that important. I assume that I could buy a good 8 week plan and then just reuse that and tweak it for my own purposes. I know that its not that hard to make my own plans but for $80 or something for 8 weeks its not bad and saves me time and effort.

Yeah I mostly ignore the Zwift Plans there are some good ones on there though.
Wringer for one, I mostly use ones like that or make my own and follow what my Garmin tells me to regards intensity and rest days.
Works really well it even knows when in I'll and alters training to suite

I've thought the same about TP but it just looks so.... bland. I know that shoudn't matter too much but I like to have something to look at

Edit: I'm thinking of Trainer Road. not TP.

Yeah, the interface is rather dull and annoyingly doesn't work split screen on a iPad so I have to have 2 devices running.

For me between the 3:
Trainerroad:
Good:
Work out lengths are nice round numbers
Adaptive training
Can set days in a plan around your life
AI ftp detection

Bad:
Entertainment
Risk of burnout (not enough easy rides)
I feel like it is always pushing you to failure and then adapting down

Wahoo:
Good:
Entertaining videos/story arc
Good variety
Intensity seems to be just right to get the most out of you via 4DP
Better interface for showing rpm/instructions

Bad:
A lot of short rides when doing a plan
Can't set workout days in a plan
Hour long FTP tests (I don't disagree with the results, it is just undesirable)

Zwift:
Good:
Racing when at the top of the power categories
Unstructured rides
Festive 500 is great motivation

Bad:
Doesn't know what it is doing with structured training

I've had good results with Wahoo during my winter builds in previous years. I did try trainerroad last spring and was unconvinced but wanted to try it with a closer goal rather then no goals in the plan. My best FTP yet was last year after doing festive 500 in Zwift so will be doing trainerroad until Christmas, then a month of Zwift and then deciding where to go.

Whilst you can't set certains days in Wahoo, I think you can manually move them around on the calendar though. You can easily just remove one and add something different if you think you know better :D I'm reasonably happy with it and really should do a proper plan again this winter...

I think I know myself well enough to do a good plan now but it does require a bit more effort and is certainly annoying when you are paying good money every month. I'm hoping the rgt closure enables them to focus on some high value improvements to their app.

My only experience with structured training was the Zwift FTP builder. Never done anything else so I've nothing to compare it to. You're not the first person to mention that the Zwift training kinda sucks. I built a dedicated paincave in the garden last year so I want to take full advantage of it now we are in autumn so i wouldn't mind trying Trainer Road for a few months

AI ftp detection
I'm interested in how this works and how accurate you think it is? I know intervals.icu tries to suggest my FTP and has been 20-25W higher than I've ever tested, but tbf I probably do put better efforts in chasing a PR up a climb than I do on a ramp test...

My intervals eftp and Trainerroad ramp test ftp are in agreement with each other at the moment. Last month, using just outdoor data AI FTP gave me 2 watts less then the ramp test I did straight afterwards and Garmin gave me 1w more then AI FTP. My next AI ftp is on Friday so I'll do another ramp test straight after to see if they agree still. I expect everyone will say it is close enough to avoid doing ramp tests regularly.

Interesting, thanks. How about the 'how does it work' element? Is it the same as intervals and just bases it off your recent results?

Not 100% sure, but presume it is based on power:HR data along with your pre and post survey responses to gauge how you are feeling. You can only do it once a month so it can average out any under or over performances?
