The Indoor Riding/ Zwift/ TrainerRoad etc. Thread

What does this bit mean?

It does sound quite simple. Does it give the actual session to ride? I assume so? You also said it does give you cadences?
Yes you could actually follow it and it will control the smart trainer if you want to.

TE is training effect basically the impact of the workout.
So 1-2 is like a recovery. 2-3 maintaining 3-4 improving and 4+ highly improving but may overtrain.

Been doing Tour of Watopia on Zwift. Did stage 4 (B ride) last night and did something I had never done before. Stopped and swapped my bike to a mountain bike at the start of the jungle section.
I missed the start as I was in the toilet, eventually started and was position 170/185 as some were still on the start line. Was 99th by the time we got to the jungle. Lost 11 places during the swap but absolutely powered through it. I seemed to be going much quicker than everyone else even with a smaller w/kg which isn't always a good indicator I find for me due to my higher than average bodyweight. Was 65th by end of the jungle section, I only have 1 mountain bike and its the Zwift branded free one. I swapped again at the end with 12km or so left, changed to my climbing set up when should have went for my flat race bike. Nevertheless finished 61st and had 3 others in sight but couldn't catch them in the sprint to the line.
Great ride, thoroughly enjoyed it. Might try it again with a gravel bike for the full thing, wonder if it will balance out a bit - slower in the jungle and slower on the roads but offset by not losing time changing due to having to come to a complete stop?
I tried the same thing this morning on the A route (Big Loop), swapping bike for the jungle and back to the Tron afterwards. I was out on my own at that point, so couldn't easily tell if I gained or lost, but from the time gaps to those ahead and behind it wouldn't have been much either way.
This one seemed to start even faster than most events, and after burning a few proverbial matches to catch up with the front group the Epic KOM stretched everyone apart. I managed to pass a few who had started too enthusiastically but absolutely no chance of staying with the climbing monsters. Good fun and ended up 9th on ZP.
Very unusually, I got repeated 'connection disconnected' messages during the ToW ride. Not sure if these were down to a problem at my end but it's a good prompt to swap the power meter batteries tomorrow.

I may try and get in on it. I need the drops saving for a new TT bike. Plus all the elevation I can get. Another 8Km to go until I get the Tron bike.

At least it's only a ramp test and not a 20 minute or even worse, full hour test!

Yeah its 50,000 metres of climbing but won't count towards it unless your specific challenge is set at Everest. So if you've already hit 50k without it selected it counts for nowt unfortunately.
I never use mine. Feel likes its cheating a little bit. I like researching and swapping out bikes and wheels for whatever ride lies ahead. Im almost at 33 which unlocks the Venge

What sort of intervals are you boys doing? Did "The Gorby" on Zwift which was quite hard work. Only took an hour as well. 5x5 min at 110% FTP with 5 min recovery at 56% between sets.

My favourite workout on Zwift is actually only a short one but it's good fun. It's called ATs/Overs. only about 30 minutes but a good workout.

Did my ramp test. Feel rubbish. I knew I was a lot less fit compared to pre-baby but as she's 18 months I can't bang that drum of excuses for much longer. I know you've got Twins Fez so the fact you manage to find time means I'm slacking but it's bloody tricky. I think I'll just suck it up and either do my rides in the evening or somehow go out to the shed at 6am to get them done.

I'm now at 2.02w/kg. Last year I was 2.9... Rubbish and when I saw that number I got disheartened and thought "what's the flipping point?!" but now I've cooled down and had a shower I'm feeling better. I've built an 8 week base/build plan and will stick to that and hopefully every watt gained will remind me why I do this in the first place.

I'll have a look at that one. I am trying to basically done zone 2 and then intervals whenever I can. I've been lucky enough that I can take a few hours on a Sunday usually to go for a longer ride for the past few months. Talking 40-65km and the guy I go with usually isn't as fit as me so its a light zone 2 ride really.

Your fitness will come back quickly with a bit of time and dedication. I'm lucky enough to work from home and I tend to do various bits and bobs throughout the day so that once the boys have gone to bed I can usually get in an hour or perhaps 1.5 hours sometimes. Occasionally its interrupted but usually I am OK. I wouldn't be able to do this if I worked in an office.

Fitness comes and goes. You can only do what you can do. Try and enjoy the feeling of getting fitter. I know its **** to lose fitness but at the same time, those noob gains are great!

When you do Zone 2 do you aim for power or heart rate?

From the research I have done... neither in theory. I guess the answer is power because thats how the trainer is set up to use ERG mode. What I mean is that I don't calculate it based on HR or FTP. I tried to use the "conversation test" where you should be able to have a conversation with someone but it shouldn't be easy. That has ended up being about 180w or 72% of my FTP. I think its a little lower than that because I think my FTP has gone up since I took my last test a month or so ago.

Thanks, Fez!

Have my first ride this evening. I should've done it this morning but I woke up at 6:20 rather than 6.

Edit:

Didn't do it last night either but I was out in the shed at 6:15 this morning and got it done. I think I'm going to need to calibrate my trainer and do another ramp test. For some reason in the ERG mode it would ask me to hold 150w and I would do nothing different and it would say I was suddenly doing 300w before jumping back down.

Expecting to do another ramp test only to find out it's even lower than I thought :p

Dusted the cobwebs off the trainer and hopped back on Zwift for the first time in a couple months today, looks i'll be back on regularly with the weather looking awful for the foreseeable future.

What device are you running the app on?
I tried it on a lenovo tab and found the connectivity to be super unreliable. I run it on my PC now, via Companion on my android phone

I use a laptop with an Ant+ receiver for Zwift and Trainer Road.

Another morning on TR. I quite like how simple it is. Requires a little bit more concentration than Zwift but it's nice to watch something else
