Road Cycling

@Martynt74 you've gotta take gloves! Cold-ish weather 101. Even if I don’t think I’ll need them I take them just in case. Bung em in a pocket.

I do love looking at the different outfits at this time of year. 10 degrees today and multiple people had full winter gear on.

Went out for a 45km ride today which was nice. No idea when the last time I got out on the road was. Probably more than a month which is depressing. Poor legs did not thank me on a hilly route after killing myself on alpe du Zwift on Thursday.

When will it stop being grey 95% of the time?

Well I did intend to but they’re in storage it seems but figured I’d be fine.
About 11ish it warmed up to 13-15c and wasn’t too bad but prior to that it was about 6c when I set off. As you say. It’s amusing looking at outfits. I saw a few with neck warmers and almost full face balaclavas on!

Luckily I went with the thicker long sleeved jersey though.

Just so no one misses the beauty of my new frame. Deserves a better photo opportunity but god knows how often I will get outside on her in the coming weeks.

I've actually improved the last year or so in my hands! just my feet still awful!
Haha, good to hear. Have to say although the weather has been pretty rubbish here the last couple of months. Wet & grey, then those couple of weeks of freezing cold. BUT I've yet to be 'properly cold' on the bike yet this winter, but admittedly I've done my usual of completely overdressing for my commutes... Must be doing something right, only a few times I've got properly soaked through too.

Like Thursday morning was forecast 0 with -1 windchill, when actual was more like 4-5 and the wind only a bit below. I slightly melted as was in my sub zero gear - thermal shorts, knee warmers, thermal tights over top, thermal base, thermal jersey, windproof thermal jersey over top. Thermal socks, Spatz roadman overshoes. Sotto zero gloves. skullcap, neck/facebuff, thermal windproof hat and extra windproof face buff on top!

This morning it was really mild (although very dark here), easily 8-9 degrees. Too warm for December!

I cheat, I've got a Briard (dog) which has hair not fur.. I brush him then use the hair that comes out to stuff inside my shoe ends. Works a charm :D
Nice! Natural fibres and insulation! Natural recycling too! :D

Friend of mine is a 'friend of Rapha' - got these 2 for £45 instead of £320 :D.

Amazing deal! Seriously if you mate can snap deals like this then grab them! I've bought second hand 'Core' shorts (normally £115 new) for £45 before now... Even Rapha good sales/BF on them are only down to £85-90

Is 'Friend of Rapha' a Clubhouse thing, or is it a factory shop/outlet type thing?

I know the answer to this is "it depends", but where do you think you could get to distance wise for a single event in 4 months? Obviously it depends on training/current levels.

At the moment i do around 2 rides/week of 15-20 miles each. However i'm looking at events to find motivation to up this, and reclaim fitness. In the past (2022 in particular) i was quite happy running in the mountains for >10hrs, but a foot injury has put an end to that. My fitness since Oct 22 has plummeted as a result. Only mentioning that because it shows my body is capable of silly volumes.

I'm looking to sign up for this to drum up some motivation
With the mindset you have and 4 months you're capable of anything! Do it! Set a challenge - as it should be EXACTLY that. A tough challenge to build and structure towards!

But you'll have to rapidly increase your time in the saddle - plus any trail/gravel/offroad miles to be at least preparing correctly. Road miles might be not what you need - unless they're an easier way to get decent time in the saddle. You'll need to train that endurance just as much as the strength/power needed. As Paul says - practicing feeding, fuelling & recovery almost better to 'train' until the better weather comes for more focused power endurance work.

May give them a try, although I like my Park Tool TL's for something like these tighter tyres getting something specific is good. Tempted by one of the 'tyre glider' type things but waiting for some made by reputable names as don't want to buy some useless tat...!

@Roady - other than cycling I think she does some promotional and modelling for cycling, think that's how she found the connect. It happens every Christmas, essentially end of season super sale. She said items used to be a tenner when she first started doing it a few years ago.

Yeah. I think i might try one of the Garmin training plans. Something mildly structured but not too intensive.

Road miles are a "lot" easier to get in. The trails near me are more mountain bike focused although easily do-able as a combo with road biking.

Brutal last TTT of the round in ZRL last night. My best numbers 28 min - 49 min of the year. Absolutely flogged myself to stay in, skipped a couple of turns to then do a couple into the finish. Not feeling in form or relatively fit, but have been trying to make a bit of a return the last few weeks. So that's a good marker for where I am & higher than expected for an absolute max sub hour effort, so really pleased. And we won the race, pushing us into 3rd overall for the round.

In other news, still have failed miserably to get outdoors much at all - except my commute. Woke up too late for last saturdays club ride and the weather was fantastic for it too - typical!

https://intervals.icu/activities/10406328526 - proof was at my absolute limit, in theory I thought my FTP set as 265W is a bit optimistic at the moment so good to get a result and numbers around it.

Haha yeah they will, as 10 degrees is 'winter' for them! ;)

Saw reports of 29.9 degrees C in spain!? Unseasonably warm there. Jealous!

There are times in the spring/autumn where I'll take long fingered gloves with me even when starting in short fingered...! When you need a pocket filler

It's gorgeous! Love that Jayco colourway, they really stand out!

Sweet build!

Yeah I know they used to, I figured it went into the Clubhouses when they did that, then to the RCC side of things... Then they had the couple of Outlet Stores. Are they still there? Actually not heard much about all the 'extra' Rapha stuff the last couple of seasons...

Nice weight saving on the mech hanger :)
Haha, it's a very light frame anyway and with 303 Firecrests on there will be a real weapon. Probably 8kg?!

Thank you!

I believe it was 7.5kg without the saddle bag and lights. The saddle is quite heavy and its running tubeless on 30c at the back and 28c front which adds a bit of weight.

In other news, new edge 840 arrived today. Much nicer than the 830. Much more responsive and generally just a much better experience. Would I pay any serious money to upgrade from the 830 to the 840? Nah. Most I would pay would be around £100 and that would be pushing it. Garmin were very good though. I sent the 830 off on the 14th and got the 840 back on the 20th.

Sometimes i wish i was more prepared. Last night i went to look at a car for sale, and we managed to complete the sale there and then (this is unusual in Spain!). I drove home in the new car and left the one i'd borrowed from my dad in a supermarket carpark.

Today i set off on the bike with the intention to cycle there (~42miles) and then drive back home. As i was walking out the door my wife asked if i had the car keys (i hadn't). So luckily she reminded me at that point rather than me realising when i got to the car. Then when i got there i remembered the wheels are Thru-axle and so had to find a hardware shop to buy some allen keys :(

What i've noticed on the last 2 longish rides, are that my ass gets really sore. Was worse today, although maybe still some tenderness from Sundays ride.

At what point do you question if it's the saddle that doesn't suit you as opposed to just some "adjustment" and that you'll get used to.

This is the one i currently have on the bike.

If anything i'm probably more uncomfortable on this that i was on narrower harder saddles. I'm wondering if i went with the mentality that because i'm a bit fat/big then i needed a bigger saddle, but i'm starting to think this isn't the case. Just curious at what point i try some other options vs persevere.

Without sharing pictures, what sort of pain are you having?

Sure you don't want pictures?

It's a tricky one to phrase i guess, but just feels like over say 30 miles it feels bruised and have to keep adjusting position to try and relieve it. I'll admit to not using chamois cream, but it doesn't feel like chaffing and it stops after a ride when sat on other chairs etc.

The slightly odd thing is that in the past when i've had a break from cycling, not that i've ever had intense periods of regularity. When i start it can hurt, but then feels bruised for a few days after, so a ride the next day feels worse. However this time doesn't feel like that. It's purely on a single ride. I feel i could get on the bike today and not feel any ill effects from yesterdays dioscomfort.

That's quite a wide saddle. They are a very personal thing and can be a bit of trial and error. I'm a big fan of the Fizik Arione. It's a saddle that is fairly flat but allows you to shift about vs holding you in a fixed position like some of the specialized ones. It's normal to have some ischial discomfort if you havent been riding so much or are upping your time on the bike. Ultimately if you are serious about biking then a bike fit is well worth the investment. Most will measure saddle pressure as part of the process and look to optimise it as they dial in the fit.

Bruising is probably better than chafing in that it suggests you’re pretty stable on the saddle but perhaps have too much of your weight over the rear axle. How do your hands feel after riding? Is the bruised feeling on your sitbones?

Could be, i had a bike fit on my previous bike, but then have been a bit lax on trying to configure this one. Not helped by going with a fix stem/handlebar setup so not much adjustment available there.

Hands are fine after riding, sometimes a little achey during the ride, especially in the drops as if i'm putting too much pressure on them.

I'll be honest, i'm never quite sure where my sit bones lie because of my fat ass :p

Want to take advantage of the C2W Scheme, and got £1600 for now. I'm wanting to get a new gravel bike ideally and trying to squeeze carbon into the budget. Which one out of the below would you think is the one to go for? Or another option? Carbon isn't a necessity, but thinking i'll swap groupset before I swap frame.
