Most Worthwhile Upgrades for Sim Racing

Cool. I’ve never updated my bios. Still in the 2018 version from what I can see.

The guides I have watched seem easy enough (famous last words)

Is that something I can do now, in advance or will it cause problems with my current cpu

Thanks again for all the replies.

Anything above a 5600 isnt compatible with my motherboard. If i stick to a Ryzen 5 i think 5600 series is the best i can do. At £120 is that a decent deal? I'd then get a SATA and that should help thinks along until i get a better GPU?

After a quick test my CPU and GPU both give me about 90fps on a 27" at 1080p with mid-low settings on Le Mans Ultimate Sim racing game
check 2nd hand..plenty around as people upgrade to am5..should get below £70..and you can get 32gb of ram for £60 new, if you go 2nd hand and that £45...sell your 16gb for £15/20.so upgrade isn't massive cost on that. running ouit of ram will def cause stutters

Purchases have been made. I explained my predicament to my wife and we discussed it.
"We" are getting the 5700x3d, and 2x 16gb RAM. I have also ordered a 2tb M.2 SSD. I had a long hard think and this should to me well for a while, with a GPU upgrade at some point down the line.

The wife and daughter will cover the extra cost as my Bday present (which I reluctantly agreed to).

Everything should be here tomorrow.
Is there anything specific I need to do when downloading the BIOS update to a usb drive?

Never mind. Bios updates. Just got to wait for the new bits. Is there a preferred order or just whack them all in at once?

You mean with the BIOS updates, or the new parts?

For Asus BIOS updates, I'm pretty sure you don't have to use old versions, just the one you want.

You could ask Asus if you want to make sure, but I don't see anything on the BIOS update page that says you MUST use x version before y version.

With the new parts, no, it doesn't matter, but some CPU coolers obstruct the RAM slots and can even make it hard to access the M.2 slots, so I'd probably do the M.2 first while everything is out and the cooler is off, then the RAM, then the CPU and then the cooler.

Hi, yes, i meant installing the parts. The BIOS update is all done now.

So there is no need to put the M.2 in, then get it running, then put the CPU in and get that working before the RAM swap?

Its likely the M.2 will get here before the CPU and RAM so I'll just pop that in as its just behind the GPU.

Thanks for the help.

You could do all three together when the PC is dissembled, it doesn't matter to the motherboard.

What cooler are you using? I can't remember if that was mentioned.

At least I know now. Is the one I have from my 2600g ok for now? Or best to hold off until I get a better one. It looks like the 57003xd pulls a fair bit more power
Is it a wraith stealth? They have been tried and they do work, but not particularly well.

Ideally, I'd either get the cooler suggested above, or the arctic 36, which OCUK have for £25 (black version).

It is that one. I’m assuming poor cooling will throttle the performance and possible damage?
I’ll have a look at an upgrade. Thanks.

Na, it won't damage it, it will just be a bit hot and noisy. It probably wouldn't reach throttle temp for games, but fully multithreaded apps: yes. There's a lot of different revisions of the stealth though and I think some are better than others.

Ok, I’ve been going mad trying to see how much of a problem it is. I’ve pretty much maxed what I can spend right now so do you think the wraith stealth would do for a few weeks, I only really play racing sims at 1080 and rarely more than an hour at a time
