5080 & 5090 Coil Whine Thread

I have been told that MSI cards are potentially the go-to this gen for reduced coin whine as they are (reportedly) using a different choke than other manufacturers.

Until we get some tear down videos take it with a pinch of salt but fingers crossed.

It's believable given they improved the 40 series cards half way through (as did Asus).

Looks like theyre using the uprated ones. (suprim pictured)

Hardware Unboxed said there was no coil whine on this, but some small electrical noise. They said it was better than the FE.

The Wattage over clocked goes to 650w though lol.

If the suprim goes to 650w I bet you the astral will hit 700w as generally speaking Asus top end clocks higher than suprim top end.

Can I use hot glue to silence the coils on the card?
We had a few members try it, again generally speaking this did not do anything and voided the warranty on the card. This is not recommended.
hot glue doesn't work, it needs to be something that will wicks up the coil and stop it vibrating.
hot glue is just blocking the cavity, it doesn't fill it

if these cards whine again, hopefully reviewers kick up enough fuss that they start using prefilled chokes or whatever

Any body buying one make sure your case is well ventilated otherwise the rest of your components will cook and coil whine will be the lest of your problems.

Many moons ago I use to work in an electronics factory making alarms and stuff. Hot glue doesn’t work you need to use a special resin.

its all within specs while using as much power as a heater i dont see what they did wrong, those temps arent great but find a 2 slot card pushing that power and can stay under control, il wait
If it is 77c temp then the hot spot be a minimum +10c. The thermal cutoff point is 90c. That’s cutting it close and like you said it all within spec. But running at a minimum of 87c hotspot temp and mem at 94c? No thanks
Very early signs/days but MSI seems to be doing better than Nvidia and Asus so far.
What we need is a guinea pig to buy both and test them out.

Not 50 series related, but my tuf 3090 only has coil whine when running minecraft with shaders. So going by my extensive tests, aslong as you dont play minecraft you should be golden

If i get a suprim 5090 on launch (hopeful, i know) ill be sure to continue my testing and report back with more minecraft vs coil whine.

In my experience the card profile can change in the first week, but very rarely after that.
