5080 & 5090 Coil Whine Thread

Just checked my 4090 water force and it's got R15 chokes, and I still maintain my claim that this card has no audible whine
I guess we need to wait for reviews on the aorus and see.

I'd much rather skip the 150 premium that MSI charges even for the ventus and go straight for a windforce (which seem to be priced at msrp), but it entirely depends on the whine.

What was the whine like on the other AIBs for the 4000 series?
My Gigabyte 4070 Ti Eagle OC was silent… lovely card.

My cousin’s MSI 4070 Ti Suprim is the same… another awesome card.

I am staying away from the reference/FE cards, they just run hot and whine. Previously owned the 3080 and 6950 XT.

"In our experience with this specific card, the coil squeal has been very noticeable to us. So, the Founder edition RTX 5080 will make average coil whine, rated 5 out of 10."

Pains me to say it but the fe models are a no go this generation, or rather these day 1 cards.

I feel like they have put niche small form factor users above everybody else, at the expense of thermals, noise and coil whine. If I thought they did it to be nice to their AIB partners I'd be happier, but I'm sure it is just an accident lol.

Have they deliberatly made the FE this way to differentiate it more from the AIBs.. have they actually intended to do the AIBs a favour. The AIBs have got to be happy it's not a 3-4 slot monster, just the same as theirs.

Naah they just cheaped out on components to keep the 5070Ti 5080 under $1k

Honestly the dual blow through design is awesome and I can see it being a thing AIBs will adapt in the future.

The only FE card I have bought was a 1070FE and it coil whined like a dying pig. Very bad experience, so never again.

My two last cards were Gigabyte Eagle OC models - 3070 & 4070Ti Super, no whine from either of those.
If I was upgrading (I'm not) I'd be tempted to go for the Eagle OC again.

Coil whine reports for 5080 seem all over the place. Lowest Guru3d ranking is for the FE (5/10), which is absolutely not consistent with their 5090 reviews. Both ASUS and MSI at 8/10.

That's almost the polar opposite of the 5090. It's not going to be an easy gen lol.

Hmm according to TechPowerUp.. The 5080 TUF is a screamer.. I managed to snag a 5090 TUF.. How worried should I be? Do they use the same MOSFETs and Chokes? I've not find a single 5090 TUF review online..

Well just remember all these cards are covered by distance selling regulations even if a retailer dosn't class coil whine as a problem. I have never known a retail try and stop a return due to this however, but it's there just in case.

I'd always advise opening carefully and leaving peels on until you know your happy.

If your based in the uk, you have 14 days to send it back with no excuse.

Managed to get one of the Zotac 5080 Solid OCs which arrived today, it certainly has some coil whine but not intollerable to me.

My case is a Fractal North XL mesh with the three stock Fractal fans in the front, Arctic III 360 up top and one additional 140mm Arctic P14 at the back so not a silent build by any means but it is virtually silent when idle and even under load the fans and pump don't seem to really work too hard.

Appears to be worse when the FPS is very high - running Timespy at 1440p when it hits 250+ FPS it is auidble from about 50cm away with my case up on my desk, outside of those scenarioes though it seems to be fine to me though.

For my uses it is fine, and certainly with a pair of closed back headphones for gaming use I cannot hear it at all.

can we get an audio sample?
