Help me pick a charity

Can you please elaborate on what you witnessed to make that decision?
Wasting millions on doubling staff numbers to increase profit, an unnecessary rebrand, HR payouts for staff who were caught stealing, incompetent staff(accountants, directors, CEO and board members) all over a 4 year period.

For some time I have been meaning to give away more of my money to worthy causes. I am conflicted as to who to give this money too. I always get the impression some charities are more worthy than others. Often you hear of CEOs and employees at some of these charities earning obscene wages. And my understanding is that to be registered as a charity you only have divert a certain proportion of monies raised directly to those charitable causses. Giving me a somewhat corporate impression of some of these entities. It's like some of them are basically businesses that divert a relatively small part of their turnover to their direct cause - or at least that's the impression I often get. Rightly or wrongly.

Besides the obvious high profile charities such as cancer research, BHF etc, which I'm sure we have all been touched by can people share any insight as to who or what they think makes a good charity and why? And how they would go about choosing whom to give their money too? I usually donate a £300-£500 each year to various causes but this year I would like give a more substantial some of £10k.

There is a local hospice that looks after people with terminal illnesses, and my mother who is getting on these days has seen a number of her friends spend time there. She has always spoken fondly of the care that they have received. This is certainly a place I am considering donating to. Any insight is appreciated.:)

Personally I only donate to smaller, local charities, knowing that my donation is more likely to reach it's intended recipients.

Places like BHF, CRUK are just too greedy, often forgetting they're a charity. You'll set up a small monthly and almost every month they're calling/texting/snail mailing, trying to extract more cash out of you.

Scandals like CRUK had only a few years ago, when it was revealed that less than half of donations actually went to funding projects. The rest was titles "Administration costs"

I’m often chugged in the streets by people wanting to sign me up to ostensibly good causes but, as I always explain, I’m willing to donate but I am not willing to set up a subscription and give them my bank details.

This, however, seems to be their only business model and they are unable to accept a one off donation. Seems insane to me.

For the record, I regularly donate to Battersea Cats and Dogs, RSPCA and the Salvation Army.

They hope you forget and can't be bothered to cancel

A local charity with all those positions

Plausible. I've just joined the board of a small charity, it has an appointed ceo whom we're in the process of replacing, accountant and we've had to make a large number of legal payments thanks to the behaviour of said ceo who is being replaced.

What charity you do choose have a look on companies house and see if they receive any money from the NHS and see how much they've lost in the last 5 years.

I give every month to breast cancer charity and an NHS helicopter charity. We gave some of my mums estate when she died to MacMillan as they gave her excellent care before she died. All worthy causes.

I don't give anything to charities at the moment but in the past I've donated to Salaam Balaak Trust and Purpose of Life.
