The Air Rifles & Pistols thread

I was always under the impression that the HW110 doesnt have a conventional regulator but has some custom jiggery pokery which operates like a regulator. However on the weihrauch.de website it does say "with regulator". It has ruined me though as its so easy to shoot and you dont have to account for the sweetspot like you do with the S410. Definitely 2 different styles of shooting required when switching between the 2

It uses a different style but there is a regulator. There's some odd discussions on the internet but they're mistaken.

I don't know if I could go back to unregulated. I took the reg out of a rifle that normally was unregged and the power curve was astonishingly bad. Pellets bouncing off a wad of newspaper at max pressure and so slow the chrono couldn't see them. Then the power slowly went up to too high then back down again. Naaaah.

If you have a large bottle gun the "good" pressure zone is probably quite reasonable but I have small tube air reservoirs and I might be looking at 20 consistent shots unregged. Or with regulator, 50-60. It's an easy choice.

I've heard good things about well designed unregulated rifles but it's just better with a reg so why bother.

From my own experience for reg'd vs unreg'd, I started off my PCP airgun history with a Logun Solo (unregulated) but didn't know muich about PCP's at that point so things like power curve, shot FPS consistency etc were something I knew nothing about but I felt it shot "OK" as a first PCP. Then I had an AA S200 which I used for ratting and I noticed that aimpoint shift far more readily as the pressure dropped as the S200 is an unregulated rifle and I started to learn about the power curve, regulators etc and considering the relatively small air cylinder, I was still surprised to see that the S200's consistency was pretty poor with only about 30-ish shots at a "good enough" consistent FPS (10fps variation) which rapidly dropped off a cliff past those "good enough" shots.

I then decided to mod the living poop out of it and added a BSA Ultra barrel & Ultra Cylinder (both over 6in shorter for way easier vehicle use around the farm) and added a custom "Tweaky" regulator to the Ultra cylinder and the difference was night & day, a genuine moment were I realised "why go back to unreg'd on anything" as my consistent "single figure" FPS variation shot count virtually doubled to about 60-ish shots on a much smaller air cylinder!

Due to that S200 experience I later bought a BSA S10 Mk3 (amazing - best thing I bought) and a Daystate Airwolf MCT (not worth the money TBH) which were both regulated and that consistency the reg brought was a huge game changer for me.

I've been stuck into pellet testing for the last couple of months going from 30m to 50m. Thought i had narrowed it down to 3 maybe 4 different pellets which all group well at 50m if you ignore any flyers.

See below, measurement are W then H. So basically hitting sub 5p groups (18mm) at 50m

Even started shooting playing cards, end on, at 50m with relative success.

Last week someone gave me a 1/3 tin of H&N Baracuda FT.....the groupings are stupidly good and very consistant. Considering the pellets are 4.5mm and some of these groups are 10mm squared im genuinely amazed. At every distance i was wondering if i was outright missing but nope... putting them through the same bloody hole over and over again. See below

Well its back from a service and all dressed up in a stock (shes a bit of a an old girl (2007) and a beater anyway).
ok it is official now i feel old....2007 is not old, its barely drinking age at the pub ;)

the air rifle i use is the same rifle that i used as a child that my dad bought probably in the late 1950s!, :D (albeit it has a newer telescopic sight on it now)

(a Webley MK3 2.2 lever air rifle)

great parenting with my 8 year old :D

edit actually now looking at the image i am wondering if my dad has swapped out the air rifle as it isnt how i remember it and also looking at the google images of the mk3 vs my photo. its definitely a lever rifle like the webley however

Full bench rest rig or just you and a sandbag?
Bipod and then against my shoulder and rested on my and fist/hand on the bench

@Richie yeah I know :) I was set at 50m originally with a different pellet and just did a rough 2-3 pellet zero at different ranges as i have a rough idea of my adjustment at each range from previous testing. Hitting slightly high when aiming on the mark is actually helpful as it means i can aim for the dot/mark but i dont shoot it out so i can keep it as my aim point. If you short your mark out then it can make aiming actually harder and less consistant when you're focusing on group sizes instead of 100% bull.

@bigmike20vt If there are no markings on it, post a picture and we can prob identify it. I have a Mk1 airsporter in bits which was my dads and a Mk2 Meteor, both from late 50's/early 60's

I asked my dad. he still has the old Webley I used as a child but the one he uses now and that me and my lad borrow is apparently a Weihrauch HW 97KT..... so unfortunately not the one I grew up with.

Hi all, looking for an air rifle for my 13 year old daughter to practice with in the garden. About £300 max ideally.

Any recommendations for retailers and make / models please? I believe she uses break barrel types with iron sights. Thank you.

Personally an HW35 would be my go-to, but the HW30 with a scope is about in budget. If not, then Hatsan and Cometta are decent options. Big Dans Airguns, DAI Leisure, Pellpax etc. will all deliver to your door, or your local RFD will likely order in for you.

Thank you for this. I had a HW when I was younger and it was decent. Will research the cheaper models you mention too.

The HW30/35 is one of those guns that everyone should own, prices being as they are in recent years, I suspect they’ll not loose a massive amount if looked after. Just remember that it’s legally your gun and she can only use it with adult supervision and since the law change, it needs to be locked away to prevent unlawful access. That can be a 99p padlock on a gun slip zip, but it needs to be a lock of some description.

Might have agreed in principle a purchase of a, new to me, .22 air rifle. I've been eyeing a few rifles up recently and by chance a bloke at my range went to buy an air rifle compressor off someone but they wouldnt let it go unless they bought the air rifle as well (owner had died and seller just wanted rid of it all). So he bought the Hills compressor but also walked away with a Brocock Commander XR 480cc carbon bottle, in a case with a £300 scope on it. He brought it down the range last week and had a shoot with it but he prefers .177 and this is .22. He let me have a go with it and i've kind of fell in love with it and he knows it! Anyway, yesterday he had it at the range and asked if i wanted it. After a bit of thought we've agreed in principle on a price for the rifle and mod, no scope and i've gave myself a week to think about it before fully committing.

It looks to be in mint condition and I get the impression its spent most of its life in its hard case. I need to give it a good look over but im 95% sure im going to have it at the moment. Its mouse fart quiet, very well balanced and smooth as butter to operate. Pretty sure im going to sell my S410 now to fund a fair chunk of the rifle. It retails at ~£1200-£1300 and i've agreed on a little over half that so its a bit of a steal in my opinion.

This isnt the rifle im buying as i dont have it yet or any photos but this is the rifle in question so this pic is just for reference. The grip, buffer tube and stock are all AR compatible so it give me some options to change some of the furniture. I did ideally want the folding stock version but is the fixed stock version. It can be rectified though by adding an AR folding stock mount

@Zenduri
Pretty sure a guy had one of those at the range yesterday.

I'm not really into air rifles I know little about them, but I said to the guy I thought it looked cool and he said he was really pleased with it.

Well the guy who was selling me the above rifle welched on the deal and after asking him what hes willing to let it go for hes decided to now keep it.

So im now looking at the Brocock Ghost Plus and im in discussion over a discount on the pricing with a shop at the moment however that will be a late January purchase. I was toying with getting a bullpup before i saw the commander but now thats off the table im angling back at this now. The aim is to let my current .22 air rifle go and sell that to offset some of the cost.

Well........

Just waiting for it to be built at Brocock then shipped from there to the store I ordered from then to me. Managed to get a 10% discount plus free postage so a fair bit saved and by far the cheapest deal anywhere on the internet.

Also managed to pick up a very good bipod for cheap using an Amazon gift card balance I had sitting around

Finally arrived but my god have i had a ballache getting this.

I received my Ghost last Thursday and it was a mess, obvious wear, some rust, a scratch on the barrel and poor bluing on the barrel. To cut the story short it came from the factory like that and i suspect someone tried to pass off a demo unit that was at least 6 months old as a new rifle. After kicking a bit of a stink up online I eventually ended up dealing with the factory direct rather than the retailer to arrange a replacement. They ended up building this one on Monday, tested Wednesday and delivered today and this time its all new parts and genuinely a new rifle. They did throw in free £165 moderator as a good will gesture so while my initial experience was crap my current opinion is much better considering how promptly they acknowledged their failing and how they put it right.

Oddly, when you posted about this on AGF, you got a sleeve of pellets free rather than a moderator upgrade, and the ballache/kicking up a stick was you called Pellpax/messaged Ross at Pellpax and Olivia at BRK and sent pic's like anyone would do, and between them, they arranged for you to deal with BRK rather than Pellpax to speed up the return/replacement. You even mention how promptly they acknowledged the issue and put it right, so i'm not sure what part of that requires 'eventually', 'ballache' or 'kicking up a stink'? From what I read, you got your issue resolved with minimal effort and quickly, unlike some, just a shame BRK sent the first gun out to Pellpax like that, but no need to ham it up on here.
