5080 & 5090 Coil Whine Thread

The 5080 TUF I had was probably somewhere in between those two. Definitely more the 'angry bees' style than squeal.
I remember you posting about it but didn't know if you had the the squeals or angry bees. Not that it any consolation but the cards I have had the worst coil whine were the squealers. I have always found the angry bees easier to ignore than the squealers. NGL I am kinda sceptical and maybe I just have to accept if you want a MSI or Asus card then this the norm. While the above posters 5080 is way quieter it was drowned out by the GPU fans. Turn those fans down and I betcha that whine which wasn;t so prominent becomes an issue.

Yeah, it was so noticeable because my new case has better flow so the fans were even quieter. I did experiment ramping the fans up for a bit, which took the edge off. Still too annoying in quiet games though. Fine if you're blasting along in Forza Horizon or something.

Sorry to hear that it didn’t work out. What are you in the market for now?
I'm just ****** off with the whole thing tbh and sticking it out with my 3080. If I'm spending £1000-1300 then tbh it has to be almost flawless. I don't want any cable melting worries or coil whine. It seems ridiculous that a quiet card that doesn't burn my house down is such a lofty ask for Nvidia right now. For a while I was contemplating getting maybe a Zotac 5070ti as a stop gap, but I wouldn't pay a penny over RRP.

Maybe just see what the situation is like in the summer - you’ll have better choice, more reviews etc.

You should be alright on the cable front if you’re sensible with installing, PSU and cable choice etc - just don’t run the PC maxing the GPU unattended and that’ll mitigate against the worst sort of thing that could go wrong.

Totally with you on the coil whine. Unacceptable noise = straight back. It’s pretty much the number 1 priority for me with a new card… no annoying noises.

With pleasure :)

it is true that it does not look exactly like in real life... I must point out that because the suprim 5080 heats up little, my personalized ventilation curve remained in the "idle" range and as a result the ventilation is very discreet and does not cover the slight coil whine

I would like to listen to yours aha

The MSI RTX 5080 Ventus 3X OC I got from the spicy place at RRP is whisper quiet if that helps at all? I know it's not the high spec card that others are after but coming from a 2080 Super I'm happy with the performance uplift.

I have the lower specced MSI card as well. I think it looks ugly as hell but it does overclock well and is pretty quiet as well, However I have noticed instead of coil whine it seems I have a slightly rattly middle fan....it is ever so faint but if I stop the middle fan it stops. and it never gets loud or even that audible when the fans are going normally. With the pain of availability of the 5xxx series I am not going to RMA it.

I had a little bit of that as well but found if I adjusted the GPU stand that came with the card it removed the faint rattle entirely.

Got the TUF 5090 OC today, run it thru a few synthetics. No coil whine on furmark (560fps), but it does whine quite a bit on Steel Nomad and BG3 main menu. Find it a bit bizarre as I thought mire FPS would cause whine but it did not. Having said that, its not the annoying high pitched whine, its more 'angry bees' like many describe which is easy to block out. I'm happy with it.

Most of these AIB cards look atrocious tbh. Maybe I'm an old man and not the target demographic. The Asus TUF 5080 backplate had these printed on shadows to make it look 'industrial'. Looked absolutely ****.

I don't know if we around the same age but I loved the look of the 4090 founders edition . I like the chonkiness, the entire look of it. Probably my fave of all time although I loved the look of the 2xxx series founder edition as well.

Most of the AIB cards have like accents and and ducts and all kind of bizarre stuff. It reminds of the time people use to have go faster stripes on their fiestas and corsas. It takes me back to the time a former customer of mine turned up in his nissan R34 vspec BUT across the side he had in bright red letters " too hot to trot" with a picture of blonde woman smoking a cigarette. It was the cringiest think I ever saw just like most of the AIB cards.....

Hahahahaha that's an actual crime.

Okay, so got my TUF 5090 today, and there's definitely coil whine, much more audible than my Gigabye 4090 Gaming OC. I'm not entirely certain if I'm going to return it, too lazy tbh lol.

Exactly the same here, Steel Nomad there's whine. Unfortunately, there's also whine when running inference on local LLMs too, but yeah, definitely angry bees lol. I'm thinking any one who's sensitive to coil whine should avoid ASUS for this gen imo
