NVIDIA RTX 50 SERIES - Technical/General Discussion

It's just getting better and better!
Paper launch - check
Fake MSRP - check
Low Stock - check
Scalpers - check
Burning connectors - check
Hardware doesn't match specs - check
:D
Nvidia should recall the whole 50xx gen, redo the PCBs on all 50xx cards with shunt resistors on the 12V rails, and add another 12Vx6 socket on the 5090. Oh and of course, ensure all cards have correct specs.

If only they did somthing to kick Nvidia where the sun doesn't shine, kick them off the top spot and give them some competition that is good for the consumer
Absolutely, that's what most people here want. We've seen what no competition causes, complacency.

A world where grade A spanners are paying a grand and up for performance they could have had 2 years ago for the same price and a year ago for less.

So I'm quite enjoying seeing Nvidia with egg on their face.

i can tell you right now those early adopters who spent big peaz on a 5090 and discovering the missing ROPS will RMA, they will have to wait ages for a replacement, they will be offered refunds and will cause a ball ache for the resellers, and those who are not bothered will just ignore the situation, once its forgotten about I suspect there will be many 5090s in used market circulation with the missing 8 ROPS
I think it's a mix and mag batch for 5090 and 5090D from China. Somebody mixed up 5090 dies with 5090D for a number of 5090 orders with wrong laser etching. I hope the AIB manufacturers will double check the dies they get form now on.

The missing rops makes me think back to the days when we were sold 4gb vram and only got 3.5gb :D
I'm actually really interested to see how this all pans out and what Nvidia's response will be (if anything at all).

Surely it cant be Bios related, Wonder if some Partners/Vendors are skimping on certain parts on the PCB causing this issue...even something as daft as a Cap.

I think you're right. Still, huge headache for customers, retailers and anyone else in the chain.

It is. The question is how the manufacturers gonna check, can they test the card connected in a PCIE slot, or does that render the card 'used'? Pretty sure there's no other way to check ROPS.

well some warranty claims only applies to the original purchaser, some brands do allow transfer of warranty though I believe this needs to be done by the original purchaser or the new owner will need the original purchase invoice, also most warranty claims are done through the retailer and NOT the manufacturer so any body who bought via the used market will be out of luck.

I recommend to purchase the GPU's legit thru official channels, not eBay, after 30 days you cant claim a refund on eBay so will put people in a awkward situation, especially paying scalped prices.
They will re-list their rop-less scalped cards back on the bay at an even higher price. They are going to be circulating for ages.
What will retailers do with returns - just resell them or list them as B-grade or "Today Only"?

It's not that as both those cards have the same ROP count.

I'm confused would gpu-z / driver be able to interogate silicon/chips to find how many ROPs or would it talk to one of the on board chips which knows how many ROPs ?

Ie would the cards have had to be internally configured so that the card knows it has less ROPs ?
