This is what we have to contend with and we wonder why the prices are where they are nowadays.

Max the 9070XT seems to be worth only $550 as it’s only 10% better at raster than a 7900xt. The latter could have been had for £543 in November.

Not amazing value imo but for gpu starved market I see a lot of people buying them as they don’t have an alternative. I think this will increase market share which will be good news for UDNA and hopefully AMD will innovate raw performance.

A card being available on sale for a short term doesn't suddenly make that the price the card is all the time. The 7900XT even then was around £650 normally, that's the comparable price.

I got my 7900XTX for £800 in August 2023 when it was normally still £950+ but it doesn't make £800 suddenly the price it's worth.

What I am trying to say is that mid range new gen pricing should reflect last gen end of life pricing to be truly competitive bringing higher tier performance to mid range.

TBH I buy GPUs for the following reasons

1 - Looks
2 - Ai performance
3 - Availability - the less the better

This has never happened. The RRP of the previous gen has always been compared against the RRP of the new gen. Even when things didn't go crazy in price that was always how comparisons have been made.

Nvidia barely lower cost of cards at all, so it works out for them just because you barely get sales.

AMD drop prices over the life of the cards slowly, so it'll always work out like this for them. A 7900XT is not a £543 card and a sale on it doesn't make it one.

It's also worth noting that most (all?) of these bargain prices people are throwing around were via eBay using a discount code stack, before the supplying retailer realised they forgot to hike the price to offset the code. It wasn't really meant to be sold that cheap.

Why? People were modding their machines for decades before the manufacturers even caught on. Having a certain aesthetic has been part of the whole appeal/interest in computers for a very long time.

How important that will be though we'll have to see.
I know last gen when AMD had 20/24GB and Nvidia had 16GB it was quite a big deal, now that AMD have 16GB I'm guessing it won't be such an issue.

Is this an nvidiaesq statement? Sometimes I think you lean too much to the one brand but hard to tell just by text. What people may not have picked up on this gen is the element of compression. I was drawn to this in todays AMD reveal where the second guy talking about the hardware mentions 'enhanced memory compression'. Now nvidia seem to have done this in their presentation through neural texture or something like that. So perhaps this has some reasoning to why 16GB seems to be "enough"?

Yes to a point , some like to build for aesthetics as well that's why cases with glass exist, or be the type that hides it underneath the desk out of sight

NVIDIA doesn't drop prices, they rather limit supply to keep it high, just as they openly (as in, their CEO said that publicly) did with 4k series earlier, to sell 3k series without price drops etc. They're well aware that doing this once people will expect them to always do it. Prices could be less scalping, though - but that really depends on how much really they charge AIB for parts and whether AIB CAN even drop prices to get proper cut.

These prices AMD announced gives them some room to reduce prices $50 - $75 in the not so distant future as a counter to any Nvidia moves.

That would be very AMD though, which is what they should really try to avoid. Otherwise people just sit and wait instead of purchasing, knowing inevitable AMD price drop will happen. Meanwhile NVIDIA could come back in stock and many might just buy that instead.

The 5070 Ti is £800.

The 5070 ti is $750 and AMD needs to buy market and mind share, if the 9070xt cuts into the 5070 and 5070ti's sales Nvidia has more than enough room to cut price, if in 3 months Nvidia cut the 5070ti by $100 who's going to buy amd? It'll just be the same situation as last gen where the amd card is $50 cheaper and it does nothing for amd's market share.

and in a lot of cases the 9070xt looks to beat it. 3/4 price for slightly better performance. What more is wanted?

Each to their own obviously, hell some folk don’t even want glass panel cases while other want it ‘360’
Mine is pimped out like an 80’s disco, vertically mounted watercooled gpu, fan leds that react to sound, the whole shebang - and yet the whole thing is hid under my desk (for the time being) so I don’t even notice it when gaming. But I know she looks purdy and that makes me happy.
